Silencing People Of The "Wrong" Political Persuasion
From the LA Times:
"Republicans on the Westside 'fear putting a sign in their yard, a bumper sticker on their car..."
As I commented on the LA Times piece:
A friend of mine who's a Republican in Beverly Hills had her McCain signs stolen from her front yard numerous times. It is the antithesis of democracy to try to silence others' free speech -- no matter how much you dislike their speech or the candidate they are speaking about.
Besides which, swiping personal property in BH or anywhere else is simply tacky.

Meh. I live on the West side and see plenty of conservative bumper stickers. Also, I had my pro-gay-marriage signage stolen of my front lawn.
Conservatives are NOT a persecuted minority in LA.

But apparently, Democrats are a persecuted minority in Texas.

I prefer to call Texas a democrat turkey-shoot. If you prefer, we can go with the more common "democratic killing field".
I live in texas, and has someone write a bunch of crap on my McCain-sticker-wearing van before the 08 election. Libs are fucking rude. And immature.

That's because they didn't want the world to know that someone as ignorant and hateful as you was on their side.
Known by the company you keep and all...

I won't support any political person or party with stickers or signage. Ever.
I won't put one up. I won't take one down. I am peeved that I have to actually vote for either one of the two asshat candidates available to me. Bah! Politics sucks.
I have no stickers on my car at all. I did see one I might get, if I see it in a store or online....
I had sex once. It tasted like chicken

Me, too.
I've put a sign up once, for Mickey Kaus, who was running against our elected hairdo, Barbara Boxer, in the primaries. I had to get a Democrat ballot to vote for him (I'm Independent, of course.)

That's why I'm leery of putting Republican bumper stickers on my car (behind enemy lines in Deep Blue Maryland). I'd really hate to get four flats in the parking garage at work, into which almost no wrecker can enter to tow the car to a garage.

What I'm so glad of -- it took five years to get through -- is the asshats from either side can't put a sign on my corner without hearing of it or losing it.
I live in the country -- part of my property is actually under the road. (Technically the stop sign on my corner is trespassing beyond the right of way.) I would have idiots for either party come and put a political sign on my property. I would call them up and talk to the candidate, personally, saying get your sign off my property. I actually had two argue that it is right of way. I told them call the county engineer. The signs were gone by the time I got home. But what got me on those -- the jackwads were actually arguing with a potential voter over an insignificant issue. How dumb is that?
I haven't had a sign in five years -- and the last was for the local library levy.

The thing is that "wrong" depends on the person willing to vandalize or steal. Some people will steal the pro-republican signs, others will steal pro-democrat. Some people vandalize rainbow bumper stickers while others vandalize a church, synagogue, or mosque.
The fact that one side or the other includes *some* hateful people (or appears to - maybe the theft/vandalism was just some stupid drunk and not politically motivated at all) says very little about average person supporting either side.
Now, when you have the apparently spokespeople for a group (the candidates they run, the people who claim to speak for the organization or movement as a whole, etc.), all appear to range from nasty to batsh^t crazy, then it's fair to make assumptions about those who follow and support that movement....

For this election, I get to choose for congress between a young Republican woman that has never had any real job except in politics and takes her stances straight from GOP HQ like a good little soldier, and an older Demo guy that tried to have the largest sales tax increase ever and just barely moved into the district. Neither one appeals.
For US Senate I get to choose between a long term demo woman that voted for every bailout, every stimulus, every healthcare package and every tax increase and is known for pulling in the pork and a R man known for cronyism that started a bank that has been censured for unethical banking practices.
All of them say they will cut taxes. None say they will cut spending or balance the budget. I can't figure out how anyone can stomach this election.
