I will fly Southwest no matter what.

I always check Southwest to the rest. If I can afford them at slightly more I will.

I love the story. ( I also try to use Southwest whenever I have to fly too but just because I find thier pricing and service better than the others) I am just curious as to how the pilot got that information to begin with.

There are special arrangements made for people who have to travel due to the sudden death of close relatives. (Including, IIRC, bumping on a full flight).
The gate agents have this info in a (again, IIRC) SPIL: special passenger information list. Other passengers appearing on a SPIL are unaccompanied minors and prisoners being escorted by law enforcement.
The reason I keep adding IIRC is because it has been over five years since I flew for a passenger airline.

I meant to add:
The decision to wait for the passenger was almost certainly the Captain's, not Southwest's.
The Capt has absolute, unquestionable, authority in deciding when to move the plane; nearly all Capt's, regardless of the airline, in the same circumstance would do the same thing.
