As Long As We Don't Have To Pay For The Body Bag, Too
A sexual fetish is not a disability; it's a hobby.
A man is living as an "adult baby," with a roommate who plays his "mommy," and is collecting disability benefits for it, and threatening suicide if the payments stop. Stephan Dinan writes in the Washington Times that Senator Tom Coburn, whom he calls the Senate's "top waste watcher," says it's unclear why these two are collecting Supplemental Security Income (SSI) benefits instead of working:
"Given that Mr. Thornton is able to determine what is appropriate attire and actions in public, drive himself to complete errands, design and custom-make baby furniture to support a 350-pound adult and run an Internet support group, it is possible that he has been improperly collecting disability benefits for a period of time," Mr. Coburn wrote in a letter Monday to Inspector General Patrick P. O'Carroll Jr...."You wanna test how damn serious I am about leaving this world, screw with my check that pays for this apartment and food. Try it. See how serious I am. I don't care," the California man said. "I have no problem killing myself. Take away the last thing keeping me here, and see what happens. Next time you see me on the news, it will be me in a body bag."
...In an extensive biography on his web page, Mr. Thornton says he worked as a security guard for a year and a half but said trauma stemming from childhood abuse, combined with other mental problems, made it impossible for him to hold the job, and he has been receiving SSI payments for most of the last 10 years.
What has made it "impossible for him to hold a job" is the lack of any need whatsoever to do so while the rest of us taxpayers are keeping his lardass in mommy and diapers.

"You wanna test how damn serious I am about leaving this world, screw with my check that pays for this apartment and food. Try it. See how serious I am. I don't care"
Neither should we. It's his lifestyle choice, and his problem how to fund it...

I love it when we can reach a mutual agreement. I have no problem with you killing yourself, either.

Let his ass die. If we start giving in to terroristic threats like that, every damn loser in the country will be on SSI.

I wonder how many people who should be getting SSI have been turned down, and yet somehow this yahoo manages to get it?
I went looking for who is eligible for SSI:
The amount needed for a credit changes from year to year. In 2011, for example, you earn one credit for each $1,120 of wages or self-employment income. When you've earned $4,480, you've earned your four credits for the year.
The number of work credits you need to qualify for disability benefits depends on your age when you become disabled. Generally, you need 40 credits, 20 of which were earned in the last 10 years ending with the year you become disabled. However, younger workers may qualify with fewer credits.
Unless I missed something, this guy hasn't worked enough to qualify.
Source: Social Security Administration. You can read more about SSI.

I'm supposed to talk him out of solving his problem his way?
Not likely. As our drill instructors told us, be sure to slit your wrists lengthwise, because you want to hit the arteries. If you care about your fellow recruits, who will have to clean up the mess, do it in the shower.
Or you could just suck it up and get with the program, junior.

This judge (Judge David B. Daugherty) decided 1,284 cases in the last fiscal year and awarded benefits in all but FOUR.

My mom has poor vision, significant arthritis, diabetes and a host of other problems, and yet it took her over 2 years to get on disability. Meanwhile, we have this GIANT BABY collecting SSI payments, which Mom could not get?
How about one final check with enough money to buy grown-up clothes and put gas in the car to get to the employment office to LOOK FOR A JOB so he can afford the mental help he so obviously needs? Other than that, SCREW 'IM!!!!!!!!
mpetrie98 at May 19, 2011 7:55 AM
Get back to work, chumps.
Baby (not yours, of course) needs diapers, and you get to pay for them.
Spartee at May 19, 2011 8:04 AM
I'm grateful that we live in a Land of the Free where anyone can get help for anything (almost), but when guys like Big Claiming-To-Be-Suicidal Baby can get away with indulging their fetishes on SSI (your taxes at work, folks), sometimes I wonder if freedom is just another word for "getting away with being a lazy so-and-so." OY!

never a post about corporations robbing us of billions due to lack of taxes, the real crime, but always a post about some Joe Nebbish screwing all of us for peanuts. That really gets the armchair mob here out of their seats.
FG at May 19, 2011 8:28 AM
Ah yes, corporate taxes, the taxes that get passed onto the customer in most cases.
I don't give a hoot about this guy's fetish but he can pay for it himself.

Wrong. For example, I was opposed to the GM bailout and thought they should have been allowed to go bankrupt. Though I'm for smaller government and less taxation and waste, I've also posted about how corporations (GE, for example) slink out of taxes through loopholes in the law. There are numerous other examples where I've posted about those stealing from us, large and small (while lardass and diapered, in this guy's case).

FG do you realized that the US has the second highest corporate tax rates among OECD countries, second only to Japan? That includes the purportedly 'socialist' countries of Europe - even those crazy Swedes. The idea that US corporations get off easily on taxes is a total myth. The US is actually one of the most highly taxed economies among developed countries, for both corporate and personal taxes. Our taxes are like those that you encounter in third world countries.
As for Mr. Baby Man, someone should call his bluff and move him into an institutional environment. That will clarify whether he's really so far gone that he needs SSI.

Way to jump in with an off-topic first post, FG. Here, we eat neophyte trolls like you for breakfast. You need to go back to 4chan.
"My mom has poor vision, significant arthritis, diabetes and a host of other problems, and yet it took her over 2 years to get on disability. Meanwhile, we have this GIANT BABY collecting SSI payments, which Mom could not get?"
SSI is a racket. Where I live, it's well known that if you hire a certain lawyer and get a certain doctor to examine you, you will breeze through the system. Otherwise, unless your disability is un-ignorably obvious, you will have great difficulty. You'd be stunned at how many drug addicts around here are receiving SSI.

You want to be taken care of for life by government? Tell this baby to start farming instead. Get a job in the Department of Defense or HUD. Find a rich wife.
But disability? That's for babies.

...Ah, yes, those giant corporations that are robbing us by creating jobs for people that are actually willing to work and pay taxes to support freaks who are too lazy/entitled/socially inept to hold down a job. Yes, let's tax them more so they can pass the cost on to the consumer!

By the way, the picture of these people at the Times link kind of made me throw up in my mouth.
*And I can't believe a former NURSE is allowing her "baby" to drink JUICE out of a BOTTLE! That's some lazy-ass "parenting." Teach that boy to use a sippy cup if he's old enough for juice.*
"See how serious I am. I don't care...I have no problem killing myself." Ooooh, won't THAT be a huge loss for society...
ahw at May 19, 2011 1:30 PM
Let's get real, folks. Do you think this idiot is employable? Would you hire him? Given that he's NOT employable, what do you do? Wait until he's so desperate he commits a crime, and then put him in jail? That's even more expensive.
And to all the bravado about suicide, I say, wait until you see the results of a suicide. Also, suicidal people are often homicidal, too. So Baby Snookums may take a few innocents with him when he flames out, to show us how cruel we all are.
No, somebody needed to intercede in Snookum's life a long time ago to prevent this train wreck. Now it's all about limiting the damage to society at the least cost.
Dale at May 19, 2011 5:34 PM
My former BIL was on SSI. He looked normal and employable, but he was crazy. He tried to climb the White House walls once trying to give his SSI payments "back to the country" (so at least his heart was in the right place), but all that happened was he got arrested by the secret service.
Later, he strapped dynamite to himself, went into a TV station in LA (I believe) and demanded an exorcism because he felt he'd been "possessed" by scientology.
To look at him, one might not think he should be on SSI. He could be incredibly sweet, and he was very intelligent, but, again, he was crazy.
As Dale says, who is going to hire someone like this?
If all this guy has is a fetish, I'd say it's a travesty of justice, but my guess, based on his sucidal threats, is that he's been diagnosed with a mental disorder.
lovelysoul at May 19, 2011 6:49 PM
Considering all the people I know and have known with real problems who went through hell getting on SSI, I have no sympathy for this nutcase. I'd just drive him out to a remote farm and leave him there...he can get off his ass and work to survive, or he can not and it'll be no big loss.
People who try to control others with threats of suicide should be told to go right ahead.

>>"Let's get real, folks. Do you think this idiot is employable? Would you hire him?"
See, but he knows the difference between what is appropriate in public, and what is inappropriate. The article states that he doesn't go out like this in public. And that it's not like he has a caretaker who has to monitor his behavior in public; he seems perfectly able to make that call himself. Also, he's capable of building furniture (which is more than I can do), and specialty furniture at that! So he could be employable. Hell, he could be like my younger brother, and simply be making himself unemployable - my brother is notorious for acting like a complete asshole the minute he gets hired. But if he really wanted to, he could probably build his furniture at home, and sell it online. Little human interaction at all, at that point. Instead, he chooses to do nothing and receive a check for his troubles.
