This kind of stuff just scares me. There are so many things going on at once right now, but it is as if everyone's attention is on the lamest of things. Some days I really find it difficult to believe that the year is 2011. People need to pay attention and get involved on the local levels, as well as the others. I live in Ottawa, actually down the street from this school, and an inaccuracy in your article;The girls aren't given separate spaces to pray. They are not allowed to pray at all!

Also, this is taking place in the public board, where the Education Act prohibits religious teachings of ANY KIND. We can't even celebrate CHRISTMAS!

The supposed needs of one faith, and only one faith, are being accommodated this way in Valley Park Middle School and the schools in Ottawa that Angel refers to in her comment.

"Providing this religious accommodation does not violate any Board policy since the service is not a Board or school activity. There have been concerns expressed that the practice of Islam separates individuals by gender. We do not have the authority to tell faith groups how to pray. The division of the sexes which occurs during the service is a part of the Islamic faith"

Yes, you read that correctly: the Director of the Toronto District School Board has announced to the world that he has no authority or responsibility over a service that takes place inside a public school during school hours. Why the fuck am I and millions of Ontario taxpayers paying this spineless sack of shit a big fat salary if he has no authority or responsibility?

Jihad and hatred of infidels, Jews, gays, etc. are also part of the Islamic faith. None of the imams involved have been vetted in any way by the school board. No school officials know the actual content of the sermons. If these imams were teaching their captive audience of impressionable children to be jihadis, this clown of a director wouldn't have a clue.

There's a mosque a short walk from this school. You'd think that reasonable people could reach an arrangement to adjust Friday prayer time at that mosque to coincide with the end of the school day. But that would not satisfy the Muslim desire to force Islam into public schools during school hours.

The only bright spot I can see in this is the overwhelming public opposition on just about every forum I've seen. But I fear the only way this will end is if every school board member who let it happen is thrown out in the next election. Not holding my breath for that.

The Muslim Canadian Congress is looking at legal action against the school in order to force it to STOP the prayer service and comply with the education act that bans religious services during school hours.

I don't think that "accommodating faith" is the responsibility of the public school district. The school is for learning, and "faith" is for the home life. This is absurd. I agree with the first poster regarding people needing to wake up and focus on the things that are true threats to living as a free being (the most that anyone can hope for here on earth). Amy covers these issues almost daily and two of the big ones include: government intrusion and the threat of Islamic rule.

The Toronto Star's Heather Mallick, who I often disagree with, is right on the mark on this issue.

What's most amazing to me is how some non-Muslims on the Far Left of the political spectrum are twisting themselves into pretzels in order to defend the indefensible.

The men will be dressed in shorts just like their non-Muslim counterparts but the women will be covered head to toe in the full garb, with only a small slit for their eyes. They can accommodate the faith by excusing the kids from class to go to the mosque. That's plenty of accommodation.. they don't have to BE the mosque.

No, if parents want there kids praying three times a day durring school hours in a PUBLIC school, they can come down, check their kids out, take them to the mosque themeslves and bring them back

In most workplaces, men are dressed in full formals(full sleeve shirts, trousers) with formal shoes to boot, but in summer(and many times even in winter), the women in the same workplaces are dressed in spaghetti tops and short skirts and sandals or thong footwear or whatever. If this is acceptable, then I don't see why your observation of orthodox muslims is beyond comprehension. Besides, in no formal setting are men even allowed to show off their biceps or shoulders even if they are far better than those of most women.

I think some islamic women who chose to cover their face with only the eyes showing, pose a threat to our nonbelievers safety and comfort, and that is why it is most unacceptable in a modern West.
Anyway. those islamic women who don't cover their face or who don't cover head to toe also pose a threat to people of other faith or nonfaith who may be unaware of their islamic discriminative ideology towards us nonbelievers.
