Starting Small
A guy named Jason Frisch posted a comment on the WSJ with this line in it:
Besides barry loves the lawyer money almost as much as progressive money.
My comment in response:
I am no fan of this president, nor was I a fan of the last one (a pretend conservative and pretend Small Government guy who lost the veto stamp under his desk early in his presidency). But, calling the president "barry" is like leading with a Hitler joke -- you've lost the argument for immaturity before you've even hit your points.

I'm not even sure what his points were. What is this "lawyer money" he's referring to? And why is it less popular than the progressive money?

I couldn't disagree more strongly.
Does anyone remember the demented poster by which this buffoon offered himself for our election? Personable identification is what these assholes are all about... ALL of them. Remember when Hillary Clinton changed her name to Hillary Rodham Clinton? I think it happened on about the 8th of November, 1992.... And in childhood, Obama was known to all as "Barry".
I don't want the people in these jobs to be playing games with, or seeking novelty in, matters of identity. And I CERTAINLY don't want to be told to be sanctimonious towards them when they do... Or at any other time, for that matter.
Fuck 'em. They're working for us; we can call them what we want. They'll always answer, you just wait and see.
Crid [CridComment at gmail] at August 22, 2011 11:26 PM
'working for us'??? Unless you have deep pockets, are a corporation (especially oil or financial), or have your own lobbyists, I guarantee you there is no politician above the local level (and probably not even too many there) who are working for you.
One thing our current crop of 'elected' officials has accomplished is to pretty much wipe out any faith I had left in the system.
I see no hope at all in the next election. Either 'what happened to my balls' Obama or 'just this side of batshit insane' Bachman??

It's not being sanctimonious to recognize that certain rhetorical devices diminish the power of your argument.
If you are arguing to change minds, then it's wise to eliminate elements of your argument that are distracting from the main points, and calling the President Barry is probably one of those elements. At the least, it makes you easy to discount as someone who is not serious.
If, however, you are not trying to change anyone's mind, and you don't care about making a solid argument, then calling him Barry (not to mention saying, "Fuck 'em") isn't going to hurt your cause.

Look, the only proper ways to address the current occupant of the White House are "King Putt" or (the preferred and more formal) "Stuttering Clusterfuck of a Miserable Failure".
And those are still parsecs nicer than anything the left called Bush.
brian at August 23, 2011 6:09 AM
I just refer to him as B.O. I wouldn't do that to someone for whom I had the slightest respect.
BarSinister at August 23, 2011 6:42 AM
BWAAAAHHAAAhahahaaaa! Brian, I heart you!! That's priceless!!
Cridmeister, they used to work for us. They're only working for themselves now, under the guise of "working for us". To them, "working for us" means pandering to the idiots who want to see the USA become a socialist country, and ignoring anyone who even demonstrates a modicum of common sense. But you know this.

Barry is his name. It's one he used for years. Using highlights how much of Obama's persona is a creation. He chose to reject the white family who raised him and called him Barry. Even throw his own grandmother under the bus as a racist on the campaign trail. He chose to idolize the African father who rejected him. He chose to attend a church where the pastor damned America and told his parishioners to reject middle-class values. He chose to become Barack, a Chicago machine politician and race pimp.
The name Barry is a reminder that it's not that simple. That other people are not necessarily obligated to accept the image you want to paint. They are not obligated to admire the emperor's new clothes.
Besides, it has a certain consonance with "Jimmy". The last stagflation President.

You are all so wrong about this. What's it like to be that wrong about something? Do you have parties? Is there a handshake? Is there a bourse where you trade shares of wronghood at the market prices?
I'll enumerate the intricate shadings of your wrongness later...
But for now, here's a good short piece on a closely related kind of wrongness.

Jason snuck in while I wasn't looking and took some of my realkeeping.

Jeff Flake seems like a decent guy to me. Unfortunately, he is or recently was in favor of amnesty for illegal aliens--er, immigration reform.

Here's new one.

Am I supposed to pay attention to someone who is either too lazy or too ignorant to punctuate properly?
His opinion is worth the care with which it is expressed.

(Crid - Heh. We felt that quake here in New Haven. I heard people felt it as far north as Boston!)

That's ludicrous.
Watch this space.

Thought about all day, but can't put it into fewer words than the earlier comment. If you think everyone who has something to say is going to hold their tongue until they can say in the flowery language that flatters you and makes you feel noble, then you're going to miss a lot of wisdom.
It doesn't matter if you're waiting for "maturity" or "care" with words. The person from whom you're so snobbishly trying to make social distance will happily oblige you... There's no reason for them to think YOUR attention is so precious, either.
Go watch a Tyler Perry movie. 2011 is a very, very weird year to pretend to be some faggotty Queen of England in a powdered wig, all disappointed with the unwashed masses.
The people who accrue power in our culture, especially in government, do not do that. They listen and they HEAR.
Crid [CridComment at gmail] at August 24, 2011 12:34 AM
Although I didn't vote for him, I like to call Obama "The President Who Got Bin Laden."
I didn't vote for Bush, either, but I think of him as "The President Who Realized the Stupidity of Daylight Savings Time and Gave us Our Daylight Back."
Think positive, people.

If your wife is spending too much money and her mother is fat, but you're mostly concerned about the money; you can say "you are spending too much money" or you can say "you are spending too much money and your mother is fat". In the first case you might start a conversation about spending too much money. In the second case, you're going to be talking about whether or not her mother is fat.
BillB at August 24, 2011 2:44 PM
> you're going to be talking about whether

1. I got nuthin' but time... I can quarrel about all of it.
2. Again— People who rely so very heavily on the honey of their personal magnetism –howsoever theatrically or electronically enhanced– to get elected have no business complaining, when the bees start to sting, that the public dialog is getting intimate.
Crid [CridComment at gmail] at August 24, 2011 3:42 PM
Also, I forgot something in the previous comment:
1a. THEY'RE SPENDING MY MONEY.
Now how patient am I supposed to be with their exaggerated decorum?
