So...you pick the topics. If you post a link, post just one link or your comment will go to spam. If you want to post a second one, just post a second comment (but wait about 20 seconds for your first to go through).

Good blog post from Jonah Lehrer about money and happiness. Links to a lot of interesting research that indicates people often don't spend their money in ways that increase overall happiness. E.g., people make more money, so move the 'burbs, underestimating how much worse the increased commute makes their lives:
Apparently, it's the unpredictability of bad traffic that is part of the issue:

Naw, she said "you pick the topics". Amy does that sometimes. She uses this website to promote her business. When visitors want to talk about other things, she's usually cool with it if it doesn't cost her any readership with the newspapers or the books.
She succeeds by being more interesting than other people, and she knows that's not a zero-sum competition. Got it? It's all elective here: If you don't want to read something, DON'T. If you want to offer a critique, have something better to say than 'The preceding comment did not gratify with the regal fascination to which I am accustomed.' Don't be boring; and if you're bored, go read something else.

I loved some of those tweets and retweeted them.

They found that, when people are choosing where to live, they consistently underestimated the pain of a long commute. As a result, they mistakenly believed that the McMansion in the suburbs,
When I moved out to where I live there literally werent 300 people within 8 square miles of me.
Now there is a highschool less than two miles away, and two others within 6.
Nearly 10,000 houses were built within a 15 mile radius on my place, primarily just to the south of me. Nearly a third of them sit empty due to the housing 'crsis'.
They didnt bother widening the one lane 8 mile road between my neihborhood and the highway until the backlog to enter the highway was over 6miles long.
I cant see the stars at night anymore - and people cut down my 25 mile an hour resdiental street(with a deaf blind kid neighbor) at nearly 50 miles an hour
I hate people

I was out at the renaissance festival today. I'm a regular attendee and go in costume. I'm sitting on a bench and enjoying the shade.
A guy in mundane clothes goes by and dumps something in the trash can. I hear him say to his wife in a disgusted voice "They should have recycle bins here."
I was incredulous. If this had been a real renaissance village, he would have been stepping around pig, cow and horse manure in the street, he would have had been carrying a mug for his ale and wouldn't have needed a trash can.
Jim P. at September 3, 2011 7:24 PM
Jim P., regular people don't get it. I used to go to renfaire all the time, and I just got disgusted with the mundanes bitching about every little thing, because they don't get it. You and I and people like us get it, that's one of the reasons why we go. The rest go for the "entertainment" which they then criticize. It gets discouraging after a while.
I've been thinking about going again, though. I miss it.
