momof4, that's what I thought. About five years ago, when I was unemployed for a while, I worked at an oil refinery near Bellingham (close to the Washington-Canadian border) during a shutdown-and-maintenance period. Aside from the guys (mostly Latinos) who went in to clean the tanks, almost everyone was a pipefitter or welder and I was amazed at how much the welders made. Some of that, they said, was a premium for working at refineries, but even the pay they said they got for other jobs was pretty damn good.
