I use canvas bags because they're capacious, can carry heavy things and can be handled with one hand as I use my forearm crutches to walk. Screw fashion. I want what works. Big love to Land's End for tough, good looking canvas bags.

These bags have been around for a while -- I have some, like from Festivalletteratura in Italy. But, that bag and all the rest are in a closet in my kitchen because they're ugly. I have a gorgeous leather purse Gregg got for me on Overstock.com and one I got at Salvation Army for $20. I'm not walking around with some ugly canvas bag.

Sorry to hear about your need for forearm crutches, and BlogDog, the Land's End bags aren't bad looking for canvas bags, and you're not a lady carrying one as a purse.
I rather like these totes myself. They're stylish, elegant, unisex unpretentious and practical. As opposed to the ostentatious, impractical and hideous Gucci.
the sound you just heard was a buncha male readers rolling their eyes... my ex had this big black hole of a bag...
but not a spare set of keys in it, nor a working ink pen but plenty of ones that didn't work... scissors in their somewhere but too hard to find...
so she would just ask me for the implements because she knew my swiss army knife had the scissors and pen on it amongst other things, and that I had an extra set of keys in my wallet...
meanwhile I saw a woman walking with one of these bags the other day, but with her phone in the back pocket of her jeans... you know the kind, where a tiny pocket sits actually below your cheek? So that the act of walking actually pushes out whatever is in the pocket?
So that your lovely phone hits the pavement?
fashion accessories are grand, done right, but sometimes? if your back hurts from carrying bowling balls around all day in a sack, maybe you should wonder if carrying around those bowling balls is worth it.

not much interesting to say, but it looks like the spam filter is acting up again, just so's you know, Amy.

When I'm getting socked by spam, as I have been for about four months, the spam filter sometimes takes along a righteous post. We're thinking of getting captcha, but right now, Gregg and I are both swarmed with work. We'll ask you all before we do anything to change things.

Please, when that happens, email me -- don't just tell me in a comment. I don't always see them. And if a comment goes to spam, please write me right away, and don't try to post the same comment three or four times (they all just get eaten and it takes me three start-from-the-beginning searches to get all of them). I'm sorry about this -- it's tough and stupid that we're dealing with this comments getting eaten biz -- and we'll deal with it better (proactively) after Gregg digs out.

What a wonderful way to show support for our troops! Reminds me of a couple years back when Yorkers were buying used painters pants at $250.00 a pop.
