Advice Goddess Radio: Get The Podcast -- Dr. Sonja Lyubomirsky On Happiness
"Nerd your way to a better life" with Advice Goddess Radio.
Gregg says last night's show was my best yet. I had on happiness researcher Dr. Sonja Lyubomirsky, the least sappy authority on happiness you'll ever encounter.
Lyubomirsky is terrific because she not only studies what makes us happy but gives practical advice on how we can be happier -- even substantially happier -- by making small shifts in our attitude and behavior. Here's the link to get the podcast:

She's really solid on science and wrote the fantastic book, The How of Happiness: A New Approach to Getting the Life You Want, which I highly recommend.
Next week on Advice Goddess Radio, Dr. Helen Smith on men and men's issues, also at a slightly different time than usual (1:30-2:30 pm Eastern, 4:30-530 pm Pacific):

I'll be posting an entry later in the week for you to leave comments and questions for Dr. Helen and me.

Amy, I've enjoyed your last few interviews--I thought you'd been doing them for awhile.
I liked that Dr. L acknowledged that there are genetic and circumstantial factors in happiness. So many self-help books make it sound like it's just a matter of attitude. I believe there is one more factor, though: diet. When I started a low-carb saturated fat fest, the problems I had with low mood mostly evaporated. Others have found the same thing.
Changing things up as a key to happiness makes me feel better about all the money I've spent lately fixing up my house.

I've moderated author panels (at LA Times Festival of Books and other book festivals) and interviewed various authors at these festivals, but it has been a longtime dream of mine to be on the radio. I had an opportunity to test to be on local radio -- and I did a few submissions and got some training in how to talk from a local station manager, but I would have had to do a political show. As I was doing the submission tapes, I kept wishing I could talk about science and the stuff I study for my column. I would make money doing a show on regular radio, but I hope doing what I love on my own show will take me places. Although I do need to be financially prudent, I just love doing this...every week is thrilling for me.

Listen to your tapes. (Files, but you know what I mean.)
Listen to your tapes, listen to your tapes.
Do it in a bad mood. Be hungover, underfed, on a cloudy morning when people you love have been pissing you off... Listen as critically, impatiently, smart-assedly as you can, and listen to your tapes. MEMORIZE those things... Know them so well that you hate the parts where you know a weak moment is coming up, and you start fidgeting or cutting people off in traffic. Listen to your tapes and critique yourself.
You know that one "friend" you have, that selfish, completely stuck-up bitch who your boyfriend won't even talk to anymore? Give her your tapes, ask for her opinion, and take her out for nice dinner when she gives it to you. Listen politely to what she says. Pay for a nice dessert, and on the drive home, let the wretchedness of her insipid judgments boil your heart into a furious rage, so that you never, ever forget them. Listen to your tapes.
Remember when you were a teenager, and you were obsessed with that one Carly Simon album? Over and over and over, so that your parents started looking for 'Teen Counselors' in the yellow pages?
Listen to your tapes.
