The TSA: It's Not About Catching Terrorists
Yet another piece of evidence about that in the detention of Republican Senator Rand Paul at the airport in Nashville. On Reuters, Thomas Ferraro reports:
Press secretary Moira Bagley wrote in a Twitter message that the senator told her at 10 a.m. EST, that he was being "detained by TSA (Transportation Security Administration) in Nashville."Ron Paul, a congressman and Republican presidential hopeful, tweeted that his son was being detained for refusing a full-body pat-down "after anomaly in body scanner."
Is there the remotest reason in the world to believe that Rand Paul could be a terrorist bent on blowing plastic explosives out his rectum to take down a plane? (The only slightly scary thing about him is his hair.)
As I wrote in my op-ed about the TSA molesting our civil liberties -- their mission obviously isn't protecting our safety, but something quite nefarious:
If the TSA's actual mission were its stated one - "protect(ing) the Nation's transportation systems" - checkpoints wouldn't be staffed by low-wage, unskilled workers, and they wouldn't be searching everyone. They certainly wouldn't be waiting until terrorists get to the airport to root them out. Meaningful measures to thwart terrorist acts require highly trained law enforcement officers using targeted intelligence to identify suspects long before they launch their plots. The TSA's main accomplishment seems to be obedience training for the American public - priming us to be docile (and even polite) about giving up our civil liberties.

hate to say it but, GOOD. This won't be changed until enough high profile people are inconvenienced... to the TSA, the Sheeple don't matter.
Unfortunately it's for precisely that reason that high profile people usually avoid the TSA by flying private...

I think they should detain Senators and Congresscritters on a regular basis. Then maybe something would get done about this B.S.

I was just going to link you to the story on yahoo. I was reading through the comments on that story, and honestly, we should be afraid.

I saw it on Instapundit, and was thinking to do the same thing.
For Miss Alkon -- did you get an avalanche of e-mails linking to the story?

Don't you remember, the left has declared the Tea Party as terrorists. And Rand Paul has some ties with them.
He is also one of the most outspoken against the TSA before this so, it could just be revenge by the TSA.
Of course Bill Ayers who has blown up buildings is not considered a terrorist, and no problem with the people associated with him.
Joe J at January 23, 2012 9:47 AM
Aw, Joe, you beat me to it. I was waiting for someone to assert, breathlessly, that Rand Paul is a real terrorist. Probably wouldn't happen on this site, but you never know.
Old RPM Daddy at January 23, 2012 9:55 AM
For the TSA to be there specifically to train us to obedience assume far to much presence of mind and ability at strategic planning for the US Government. That may be the result, but it is an accident.
The purpose of the TSA was to make the politicians appear to be doing something about safety, and the added bonus of starting a huge new agency with hordes of new workers who will all join the SEIU and contribute to Democrat coffers locked down half the votes and stupid Republicans provided the rest.
It is Security Theater and jobs for cronies, nothing more.

When Ted Kennedy had a problem, the TSA fell over itself apologizing.
Diff'rnt strokes for diff'rnt folks, I guess.

By God, how come you didn't post about the guy in Thailand who married his dead girlfriend? I'd put up the link but I gotta go shorn me some sheep.
Arvin at January 23, 2012 10:59 AM
Oh, that's quaint. Yes, if they detain enough congressmen, they'll do something about it.
No, they won't. They'll have a law passed that exempts themselves from TSA searches. Just flash a shiny gold badge that says, "Me big important congressman" and they will bypass the search.
By the way, does anyone know anything about a SCOTUS ruling that says we have a right to fly?

"we have a right to fly?"
Amendment X:
"The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the States respectively, or to the people."
So, go on! Fly away! Like a bir.. Oh, you meant to climb on an AIRLINER... yeah, well, that's a mite different, yasee......

If Rand Paul was on the way to work, this would apply.
The Lemuel Penn case established travel as a right, but it didn't guarantee the means.

"the left has declared the Tea Party as terrorists. "
Was that before or after Bush created the TSA? Let's keep our hyperbole on-topic.

Senator Paul was on his way to speak at the March for Life in DC. Ignoring the pro-life is an annual task for the news media that would have been a bit more difficult if a very popular tea-party senator had made it to the podium.
Yes, i do think it is TSA policy to harass the regime's enemies.
Storm Saxon's Gall Bladder at January 23, 2012 7:03 PM
Ah, now I see. It's the closet Muslim Manchurian candidate's anti-life plot to undermine the constitution by allowing the abortion of Republican fetuses.
Now let's talk about the spinal implants that let the government track you from orbiting satellites.
Gog_Magog_Carpet_Reclaimers at January 23, 2012 7:29 PM
Remember, you can only see a crowd of 'em.
Hudson: Stop your grinnin' and drop your linen. We got us a party going on over there.
Ripley: I say we take off and nuke the entire site from orbit. It's the only way to be sure.
Hudson: Fuckin' A!
Burke: Hold on a second. This installation has a substantial dollar value attached to it.
Ripley: They can bill me.
Hicks: All right. We take off. Nuke the site from orbit. (Glances at Ripley in agreement) It's the only way to be sure.

If the TSA's actual mission were its stated one - "protect(ing) the Nation's transportation systems" - checkpoints wouldn't be staffed by low-wage, unskilled workers, and they wouldn't be searching everyone.
Actually, I think it is not just the TSA, but by and large any security agency. Security is a low end job(in fact, almost everything is). The whole concept of economy of scale is to make everything a low end job by automation and standardized processes and procedures in order to lower cost and deliver quality(if consistency can be called quality). This is what it is for everything from mc'd's to ford cars. Otherwise, even Mcd's would be a semi skilled job if things were not so automated there.
And the same approach is used everywhere across the world for security, police et al. This is a mindset of the industrial revolution and changing it is not that easy especially when you have scale to deal with(so many airports and so many people). People cite the example of Israel, but that is just one airport and I never heard of package tours to Israel being as popular as those to USA or Europe. And the fact that Israel continues to be the only country doing it when even other European countries do not and other European countries follow things similar to USA(though to a lesser extent - I did not have to remove my shoes at Frankfurt(Germany) airport) probably indicates a greater malaise(of unwillingness to change a mindset). Maybe it requires something like another WW2 to change things on a large scale across USA and Europe. I guess the world is converging after all and even people in USA and Europe are losing their rights slowly and becoming like the developing countries. Maybe things are no longer going to be as good as they were immediately after WW2.

If Jim P. is suggesting we nuke the TSA, I'm down with that.
If Jim P. is simply quoting from a great film, I'm down with that.
Regarding my opinions on the usefulness of the TSA...
"Why don't we build a fire, sing some songs?"
It would be just about as effective at 'keeping us safe.'
