Is this the joke/offtopic thread? It's a picture, no discussion to derail, right?
OK, so this amuses: Students annoyed by cutbacks express their displeasure by abandoning the education they claim means so much to them.
And that'll teach us, right?

I usually see those sort of crazy spike platform shoes in weird colors on teenage asian girls, actually.
And Crid... it's a bit like student strikes, something I never understood. I mean, transportation worker strikes, yeah, that hits the public where it hurts, but what do I care if students don't go to class and fail their exams?
NicoleK at May 9, 2012 2:57 AM
Actually, I saw a lady at work yesterday with 5" bright red spikes yesterday. She works in a different department so I don't know who she is. But it caught my attention.

@NicoleK: "I usually see those sort of crazy spike platform shoes in weird colors on teenage asian girls, actually."
I remember seeing Japanese girls wearing hightop sneakers with really outlandish platform soles. This was back in the mid-90s.

Don't you understand? We're being brave! We're standing up to the man!

Love. But just looking at them makes my arches cramp up a little.
When I was pregnant, I was determined not to be one of those dumpy pregnant ladies. So I wore heels through most of it, especially to the office, where I worked for lobbyists. And, it was during a legislative session, so I was back and forth several blocks a few times a day in heels. Those were typically Nine West pumps, though, which are suprisingly comfy. Then we went to Montreal for our 5-year-anniversary- I was 7 1/2 months along by that time. I'd taken these five-inch spike-heeled ankle boots that had buckles all the way up and down... and I tried to wear them to walk around the cobblestone streets in Montreal for a night out. That was stupid. At least I didn't fall. And I looked fabulous.
But yeah... those are sitting/taking the cab or using valet shoes. (I'm wearing 4-inch heels today, but I also have a pair of flats in my bag.)

I love those shoes, and all cool shoes. I just hate the ugly feet that they cause. So I don't wear them. Love looking at them, though!

Sigh. I really like wearing unsensible shoes. But on top of being uncomfortable to wear, I'm also nearly 5'10" so they really make me stand out. Plus, when I dress up, I really stand out. And I hate standing out. Double sigh.

Sure you can. A T-Mobile commercial, for instance.

Melonie, ballet flats are cute and feminine and can be bought in outrageous OR sedate colors.

I wear boots, which I buy a little big and wear with thick socks. Some of which my friend Emily bought me in Paris that make me think of her whenever I wear them.

Yeah I tend to wear flats, Nicole K., or boots in the winter. But I do admire the gals who strut in their high fashion shoes!

Student strikes? Hmmm.
When the Deep Thought computer was about to compute the Answer to Life, the Universe, and Everything (later found out to be "42"), representatives of the National Union of Philosophers, Luminaries, and other Thinking Persons demanded that it stop ... or else there would be a national philosophers’ strike.
Deep Thought responded, "And whom would that inconvenience?"

I don't own a car and walk too much to wear shoes like these, but I do go out of my way to get interesting looking flats or sandals and completely eschew flip flops. I do have a couple pairs of high heeled boots, but they are very comfortable.
I live in LA now and am pretty surprised by how often people comment on what I wear (positive comments, not negative). I like gloves (regular, no fingers, or even just with a hand hole) which is pretty unheard of around here, but people seem to like it. I also wear ridiculously colored contacts, because why not? They aren't the type that would fool anyone into thinking they are real (well, to me the colors are unreal, but people do still ask about it), they just add color to my normally fairly dark wardrobe (I have a couple of black skirts and dresses that I wear almost all the time).

Crid [CridComment at gmail] at May 9, 2012 5:51 PM
Nice shot. It reminds me of a photo exhibit I saw a few years ago on one of our "First Thursday" art walks. The photographer, a woman, had about twenty photos of Parisians and it was great to see their sense of style.
momof4: I just hate the ugly feet that they cause.
I can see that if a woman wears them frequently but wearing heels sparingly isn't going to cause foot problems, is it?
When I was in San Francisco last fall, I noticed a lot of women wearing boots of all kinds. Much more common than here in Seattle, land of sensible shoes (on both men and women.)

You know in Japan I loved visiting all those UNESCO sites, especially the temples and Japanese chicks would be with a full face of makeup and hiking up those steps in big ass heels. If you've ever hiked up shit, well do that in big ass heels. Going to the zoo in big ass heels. Doing everything in big ass heels.
We can talk about the French all you want but damn Japanese chicks take looking good up to a whole new level. Who the fuck hikes up shit for hours in heels? The Japanese
And by the way foreign chicks looked dowdy as hell in Japan.
Purplepen at May 9, 2012 10:29 PM
Yeah, I'm amazed at what asian girls can do in heels.
I tried in the 90s, to do the platform thing. And failed.
Oh, the ankles I twisted and the knees I scraped...

Those are the types of shoes my girlfriend always wears. (She also has a pink stripe in her hair). Drives my ex. nuts but my daughters are ok with it. She's as tall as you Meloni and I'm only a 1/2 inch taller. Don't be afraid to stand out, I know I love it when she does.
