My Breakfast Bullet Hole
Exciting town, Albuquerque. I ate breakfast at Mannies -- nice diner, nice waitresses, and they got my eggs right...always a pleasure. While I was getting up to pay, I noticed two bullet holes in the window next to my table -- one at pretty much the level where my head was while I was dining.
The waitresses either didn't know the story or weren't telling, but the guy who was seated behind me said he and his son have wondered about those bullet holes for a while. Kind of interesting that they don't repair them.

I once worked out a gym that didn't repair the bullet holes in their windows either. Every time they replaced the glass, it was shot again.
Then eventually, the police caught the offenders. It seems they had a problem with the windows because as they drove home from work, the glare of the sun reflected off the windows and got in their eyes.
So, obviously, their solution is to shoot out the windows. I mean, seems perfectly reasonable to me. Just open fire at the windows of a crowded gym. What else could they do?

I just have this thing about being in a place that has been shot at.

I'm in the process of apartment hunting and found one that I really liked. As I was getting the final tour, the leasing agent said she was legally bound to tell me that someone had died in the apartment. I was actually ok with that...until I found out that it was a double suicide. With a shotgun. As I'm heading (quickly) to my car, the leasing agent was following after me saying, "No, it's ok! We repaired the drywall!" That struck me as funny (as I was driving away).

Albuquerque generally only had the crazy crime around the base in the "War Zone". Most everything else just felt like poverty.
If it's still open, you have to try the Owl on Eubank. It's a legend.
I remember my first day in Albuquerque, going downtown, walking around, finding a dive bar that was open early on a Sunday. The inside was dark, and it was falling apart, but it was full of people drinking and waiting for Monday and some work to roll around. I don't know which was the more awkward event -- getting a diet pop at the counter (they eventually found Diet Dr. Pepper ) while looking like a native German speaker off the bus from Milwaukee -- or trying to agree on what the price was with the bartender for lack of precedent.

BB's do that to windows, right? It might well have been a jr high-schoolers' prank long after they were close for the night. Not every crime is a gangland drive-by.

Two salient and unanswered questions:
1. How do you take your eggs?
2. Was Heisenberg involved in the shooting?

2. I'm uncertain.

The guy at the register said it happened 33 years ago, before he was there.

Thanks -- I might if I had any time to do stuff besides the conference.
I did just have a great evening -- it was the banquet, and we had a table of great people and then a ride of too many people in one small convertible driving through campus with me, sidesaddle, on the laps in the back with my feet hanging out the side getting home.

I am enjoying the pictures from UNM and the surrounding area. My grandparents retired in ABQ in 1970 so we spent a lot of time there visiting. Mannie's was on the regular rotation for Sunday brunch after Mass - I always ordered Huevos Rancheros (they have the best!) with red and green chile ("Christmas"). Not very paleo, but it's an occasional treat when I am in town.
You just missed the Flamenco festival at the U as well. I actually took Flamenco one semester at UNM. It was a nice respite from the engineering classes I was taking!

His son said "Amy!" a few times on the way to the airport. Heartbreakingly darling!

If you can get back there in the Fall, the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta is WONDERFUL!
