Another Silly Bloombergism + Holmes' Mental Health: Somebody Had To Know
Politico's Kevin Robillard writes about New York Mayor and dietary nanny Bloomberg on the movie theater mass murder:
New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, one of the nation's highest-profile supporters of gun control, said Friday that "soothing words are nice " but demanded that the presidential candidates "stand up and tell us what they're going to do about" preventing mass shootings.
I know! They could suggest going back in time and handing the mothers of these killers a diaphragm before they have sex and conceive their killer kids.
Of course, he's looking for words on gun control, but the obvious truth is, gun control will stop only the law-abiding from arming themselves. Mexico, with strong gun laws, is a case in point.
The people who likely had the best chance of stopping Holmes were those close to him. From a Daily Beast piece by Jamie Reno:
Holmes's mother told ABC News her son was likely the shooter. "You have the right person," she said. "I need to call the police ... I need to fly out to Colorado."
From ABC:
The woman, contacted at her home in San Diego, spoke briefly with ABC News and immediately expressed concern her son may be involved in the shooting death of at least 12 people overnight."You have the right person," she said, apparently speaking on gut instinct. "I need to call the police... I need to fly out to Colorado."
Now, it's possible there was not an inkling that this could happen in the minds of those who know them. It's also possible that the mother had heard from police beforehand and was responding in the way she did because of that. We'll surely learn more in the coming weeks and months. But, it seems unlikely to me that a person who could do something so completely horrific to other human beings would have shown no signs whatsoever of this.

>>stand up and tell us what they're going to do about" preventing mass shootings.
Make sure everyone has a gun with armor piercing bullets, so that in the future they will be able to defend themselves from this kind of attacker. Add in mandatory training and we're good.

Is this Assholio someone we know, Amy?
The flip side of the "solution" that we're demanding would be to disarm us all. Not that that would prevent criminals from getting guns, but it would give us the "feel goodism" that we desperately crave and use to convince ourselves that we're doing something about it.
Apparently, gun control is politics. Pass a few laws that don't really do anything, except hack away at the Second Amendment, but make the scared wussies of our world feel better.
Yes, this is catastrophic, but I never once looked at this incident and thought that the President was in a position to do anything about it.
We pass laws against drunk driving. They do not prevent drunks from driving. I accept the fact that we live in a dangerous world; we will never not have drunk drivers. And yes, we're always going to have people who go apeshit with guns. God willing, these events are and will remain few and far between.
I just don't get it. Why does anyone think that the solution to this problem lies with the President or the Presidential candidate?
Maybe what we need is to better secure emergency exit doors, or make sure they are never, under any circumstances, propped open. I'm not sure how James Holmes gained access through one, but perhaps that should be looked it.
Oh, I know. We'll just require every movie theatre seat come with its own bullet-proof plexiglass cubicle. Of course no one will be able to hold hands in theaters, but when the likes of James Holmes comes into the theatre, we can just sit there and laugh at him!

One prombel with the Huffpo article is Loughner didnt fall through any cracks his familly pulled strings - its a huge difference.

Patrick, you're being absurd. Of course you would still be able to hold hands in a movie theater. All you would need is a 4-inch opening between adjoining bullet-proof plexiglass cubicles. And with another simple 4-inch opening at shoulder level you could even put your arm around your gal.

I was watching ABC's This Week with George Stephanopoulos and basically Ed Rendell was saying that 6 shooters was all that civilians needed, and how the automatic weapons aren't needed.
There is a reason the major semi-auto model was named the 1911. Perhaps for the year it hit the market.
The lack of knowledge of the anti-gunners continues to amaze me.

Ken R, you're forgetting the four-inch hole at lap level … so couples can do the "popcorn trick."

Does anyone really know anyone?

Which, as we all know, worked brilliantly in Norway.

This is a weird time to think about gun control.

Which is exactly what gun confiscators predicted.
Wait ... what?

Oddly enough, there are about as many cars in the US as guns...
and yet 'gun-culture' is the problem.
Roughly the same number of people die from Car accidents as from guns... EVEN THOUGH 56% of those related to guns are actually suicides where the user took their own life.
Oddly enough, Bloomburg et al are not calling for the removal of all cars from the streets... at least not yet.
But cars are for more dangerous, are licensed and insured.
And why would anyone actually need a car, can't they take the bus? :eyeroll:
Here from the CDC website:
"Motor-vehicle traffic—In 2009, motor-vehicle traffic-related injuries resulted in 34,485 deaths, accounting for 19.5 percent of all injury deaths (Table 18). The age-adjusted death rate for motor-vehicle traffic-related injuries decreased by 9.8 percent from 12.3 per 100,000 standard population in 2008 to 11.1 in 2009.
Firearm—In 2009, 31,347 persons died from firearm injuries in the United States (Tables 18-19), accounting for 17.7 percent of all injury deaths that year. The two major component causes of all firearm injury deaths in 2009 were suicide at 59.8 percent and homicide at 36.7 percent. Firearm injuries (all intents) decreased by 1.9 percent from 2008 to 2009. The age-adjusted death rate for firearm suicide did not change from 2008, while the death rate for firearm homicide decreased by 5.0 percent in 2009 from 2008."

In which state is it currently legal to go mass murder a bunch of people? Whichever one that is, we should pass some laws there. Otherwise, this is all a waste of public outrage.

The most willfully disingenuous part of using the Aurora tragedy to push one's totalitarian gun control agenda, has to be that Mr Holmes not only happened to also be capable of producing bombs, he had in fact produced bombs. Even if you could magically successfully ban guns, all James Holmes would have done was pick another suitable venue and blown up potentially even more people using explosives.
