Gary Taubes: How The Government Makes You Fat
Reason.tv's Zach Weissmueller talks to investigative science journalist Gary Taubes:
Taubes' books: Good Calories, Bad Calories (all the references) and Why We Get Fat (an easier read).
See one of my readers who's read Taubes' work here.
A longer version of Taubes talking at OSU's University Wexner Med Center:

While living in the domiciliary of the local VA, I've been having some fun at the expense of the dietician who plans our meals.
In response to a question about why the cafeteria doesn't offer Crystal Light (a low-calorie drink mix that makes the water palatable), she replied that Crystal Light is not offered due to its non-nutritive value. So, I naturally asked when coffee and tea were going to be taken off the menu, since they also have no nutritive value.
Basically, she had no answer to that. Since I was on a roll, I complained also about the dinner we were served, which consisted of meatloaf, corn and mashed potatoes. So, we have one course of half-meat, half-starch, and two courses of starch and no low carb vegetable.
That's good eating for you. I returned to my room and opted for a couple of Osticks (a Slim-Jim made of beef and ostrich meat). Lo-fat, lo-carb, high protein. Not the best choice, perhaps but better than the garbage we were served in the cafeteria.

Forks and spoons cause obesity. Bloomberg all forks and spoons: no more spoons with a capacity greater than one gram. This would not interfere with your freedom. If you want to eat more you're free to take more bites.
