He is lucky, and so were other people on the road with him. I'm not sure I would have gone with calling him an asshole; I think knucklehead covers his case adequately. I understand the sentiment, though.
Best feature on my car, which I bought in February, is the built-in Bluetooth. I can talk on the phone without touching it -- the controls are built into the steering wheel, and I can use voice commands to call people. This is far more comfortable, not to mention safer, than handling a phone with one hand while steering with the other. Lot's of new cars can be equipped with this nowdays, I think.
Still no way to handle texts, though. But we managed for decades to drive without them.

Oh, I think I'd call him an asshole. And a shithead. There's ALL KINDS of advertising out there, advising everyone NOT to do the very thing he did! And he had to be brought back to life not once, not twice, but three (count 'em, 3) times! I would have stopped at the second time, myself. But that's just me.
In other assholery and dumbfuckery news, check this out.
Sheeeeeeeeesh.

The reason I like texting is because I can get to WHEN I HAVE TIME. Like, when I'm not driving.

I still remember a horrific incident we had here back in 2002, when a woman yakking on her cell phone (and, of course, driving an SUV), slammed into the back of a stalled car, killing a couple and their two young daughters.
Although Washington State Patrol investigators said they anticipated the SUV-driving, cell phone-yakking woman be charged with four felony counts of vehicular homicide, the Prosecuting Attorney's Office said that felony charges were not warranted because "Cellphone use alone does not constitute disregard for the safety of others."

How would you feel as a parent when your 17-y.o. son runs down a dad and his two children-- who are riding bicycles on the sidewalk?
Concord CA, in June of this year...
In this case, the 17 y.o. son survived, but the dad and his small boy did not. The teenager was speeding in the family SUV and texting when he lost control and crashed across the sidewalk.
