Jews In Black Hats Look Out For Their Black Neighbors
The Daily Beast goes PC, calling them "African-American."
The thing is, many black people are, say, Haitian, or from St. Lucia; Haiti and St. Lucia being islands which are not attached to the continent of Africa, and really aren't even near it.
If you want to get geographically close to accurate, they'd be South-American-Americans, or more specifically, Afro-Caribbean-Americans.
But, isn't all of that ridiculous? I don't call myself a "Russian-German (but basically chased around Europe by Jew-rapers)-American." And I have a friend whose family is from St. Lucia who has skin the color of dark chocolate. If someone needs to know what color her skin is, she just calls herself "black."
But, anyway, the story that inspired this little rant is a nice one. David Freedlander writes at the Daily Beast that when the hurricane hit, the city's ultra-Orthodox Jews stepped up to care for their African-American neighbors:
African-American and working-class neighborhoods of Far Rockaway and Coney Island had to be evacuated when their assisted-living facilities flooded or lost power. They were moved to the Park Slope Armory, where the only food available was Army rations--high-preservative, high-sodium ready-to-eat meals. So Brad Lander, a local city councilman, called Rabbi Alexander Rapaport, who runs the MASBIA soup kitchen in the ultra-orthodox neighborhood of Boro Park."We were supposed to be closed on Tuesday, what with the blackouts and the flooding," Rapaport said. "But this food they had, it was a like a mix between cholent [a traditional Sabbath stew] and lasagna, and it came in this inner pouch that they somehow call 'food.'"
Rapaport and Lander put out the message on Facebook and Twitter that the soup kitchen needed volunteers. Even as the city still struggled to slough off the effects of Sandy, nearly 100 showed up, peeling potatoes, dicing squash. They delivered 200 lunches of eggplant and pasta that day and made twice that many chicken and meatloaf dinners. By Wednesday, their stocks were depleted, so they put out another call on social media; more donations came in. At week's end, they were still making hot meals for evacuees and volunteers all over the city, delivering hundreds of meals to a command post in the flood-ravaged Seagate neighborhood in Brooklyn.
...Does this mean that the ultra-Orthodox reputation for insularity is a false one? "I don't know," Rapoport said. "My agenda is to feed people. If you want to find a new cultural trend here, that is up to you."

It's nice that people were helping their neighbors, but I'm not sure you can draw sweeping generalizations from one incident. But it is very nice. Rapaport and Lander are doing good work.
I call myself Swiss-American.

Not really news to me. It's called basic humanity, and most folks have a decent sense of it regardless of background.
Charles at November 6, 2012 7:20 AM
I love this, and although I pray I'll never need to, I hope to have the same sort of attitude if I'm ever called upon to help others.
I call myself an American. To describe all Heinze 57 mix that is my heritage might take a paragraph...

Actually, Jews and Christians are directed by their religions to help the unfortunates. Islam tells Muslims to help Muslims because it's god's will that the infidels are in trouble, and they're all going to hell anyway. Lovely.

First of all, this is almost tear-droppingly good.
Second—

You've talked about this once before. I don't understand why you identify with the ancestors who got raped rather than the ones who did the raping. I mean, if you have your choice....

Snarking comedians used to joke about doing this.

Probably has something to do with the fact that the raping side rarely hangs around for a couple of decades to make sure their progeny survives

I believe the part about coloreds looking for handouts from anybody and everybody. What I don't believe - and wouldn't understand if it were true - is why would New York Jews want to help coloreds. It makes no sense. Jews should find better things to do than help coloreds.
By the way there is no such thing as a colored neighbor. That n-word - neighbor - implies a level of humanity and respect for others that is wholly absent among coloreds.

Regarding what Amy said about Jews & Christians above.
Was recently reminded of an old rule (and by old I mean "back in the day where "wealthy" meant you owned land and were likely somehow involved in farming). Jewish law stated that the corner of every wealthy person's field had to be left untouched at harvest time. That area was specifically set aside for the poor to get food from.
It is this rule of leaving the corners "uncut" that led to (or is used as an analogy, I missed the specifics) the not-cutting of the hair in front of the ears on boys & men (which is why Orthodox Jewish boys/men often have that hair long or have a beard). It is supposed to be a physical reminder of the instruction to take care of the poor and to give part of what you have to the less fortunate.
Orthodox boys have their first haircut at age 3, and that area is specifically left uncut for that reason. (age three is another agricultural analogy, but that's another story for another time).

Wait a minute: Jewish law required hard-working Jews to give a small portion of their blood, sweat and tears to the needy? Socialists!
I believe the part about coloreds looking for handouts from anybody and everybody. ...

He's petulant. He didn't get his macaroni and cheese today, like Mummy promised!!!

MonicaP, I actually think the "help the needy" thing is why so many Jews vote Democratic.
However, I also think they fail to realize that doing so under coercion (taxes with penalties, etc for non-compliance) isn't the same as giving by your own choice, but is much more like, well coercion.
That's another story for another time :)

Amy - Not sure I understand your rant about the use of the term "African-American", even though I prefer terms that don't hyphenate as"blank-american" and think the term "black" is probably better. The think is all the "blacks" in the caribbean are in fact mostly descendents of slaves brought over from Africa or a mix of african slaves and caribbean natives, so the use of the term african-american is not inaccurate at all.

Besides, not every black person is *gasp* American. The black guy you see walking down the street could very well be a tourist from London or France or Australia, in which case the term "African-American" would be incorrect, and probably offensive as well. If people choose to self-identify as African-American then go for it but I don't see why it should be the universally accepted term.

Then of course I had a co-worker for a while who was from South Africa. While he wasn't dough boy white, he was was definitely melanin challenged.
Can he call himself African-American?

Jim P. - I like that "melanin challenged." I think that's what I'm going to call myself from now on.
