I Think "Self-Important Asshole" Would Have Been A More Correct Term
Sheila Hardin, a Cleveland woman caught driving on the sidewalk to get around a school bus with children disembarking, will have to stand at an intersection wearing a sign, "Only an idiot drives on the sidewalk to avoid a school bus."
From the AP:
The judge ordered her to wear the sign from 7:45 a.m. to 8:45 a.m. both days.Hardin's license was suspended for 30 days and she was ordered to pay $250 in court costs.
Shame is probably a more effective deterrent than the traditional punishments.
Here's a link to an interesting paper I read recently on shame -- the "information threat theory of shame," specifically -- by Dr. Daniel Sznycer and colleagues.

Somewhere around ten days would be better.

Umm, one count of attempted murder per each child getting off the bus at that spot would have been better

I always thought that, for some crimes, stocks and pillories should be brought back.

The website on the sign is for the Pakistani version of the company. So I suppose it fits, in a way.

Speaking of Cleveland, the bus driver who uppercut the female passenger who spit on him was fired. He was a 22 year employee with a clean record.

Shaming only works on people capable of feeling it.
Everyone's capable of feeling *pain*.
Bring back the lash!

I'd take away her cellphone, too.

I'll bet that her cellphone is an Obamaphone as her sense of self-entitlement is rather strong.

Sweet lord, what a stupid woman. I don't have an opinion one way or another
about shaming as criminal punishment. I haven't seen the data to know
how effective it is. It can be quite powerful I guess, but my
suspicion is it's one of those white liberal things to undermine the
bite of the punishment. Shame works more strongly with the
people you value, who are going to find out about your crime anyway if
you get a standard type of punishment (e.g. jail time), in which case
you get both the classic punishment and the social one. I definitely
wouldn't want a rapist to get a couple shame skits in exchange for
jail time, although it might work for lesser offenses.
