Is it just me, or does something seem very wrong with this?

Pre-shower repulsions:
[1.] Let's each of us promise that next time we hear someone say 'we have to invest more in education,' we'll punch the guy right in the mouth. And then we'll spit in the guy's wife's eye. And then we'll grab him by the throat and tell him he's not a sober, and compassionate investor in America's future, he's a fucking idiot and he ought to be ashamed.
[2.] The Petraeus scandal isn't just about suppression of political enemies anymore, or about hiding the truth of Benghazi. It's a weeping wound for the entire media/government power cluster.
[3.] Once awake, I'll regret using the phrase "power cluster."
[4.] This is modern America.
Crid [CridComment at gmail] at November 13, 2012 5:23 AM
Can we please just leave Gen. Petraeus alone? His military career and all the good he did is just going down the toilet because of some insecure, self-centered bitch. This kinda shit happens all the time to other people, why the hell do we have to watch it happen to Petraeus? He was one of the good guys. Or so I thought. I'm just so sick of it all.

Robert, I'm pretty sure we've talked about the food stamps/rich food thing here. My take is: I don't care what they're spending the $800 or whatever a month on. I care that they're GETTING it in the first place. What they buy doesn't affect my waller at all.
If you are physically capable of holding any job at all, you should get soup rations and nothing else. There's some motivation to work, and keeps people from starving.
Of course, in CA, maybe they'll soon say you can't buy meat with food stamps anymore. Win/Win in my book (except for the power-mad government, but that's a different topic.).
momof4 at November 13, 2012 6:13 AM
Crid, I'm totally with you on #1, especially since people who use "we" in that context always mean "you". And actually the phrase "power cluster" is totally appropriate, considering which word often follows "cluster".
Cousin Dave at November 13, 2012 6:13 AM
Of course, what's more likely is CA will say ONLY people on food stamps can buy meat. The rest of ya'll just have to suffer to help the poor people. Doing your part, and all that.

Oh goody. Now General John Allen is being dragged into the fray. Swell. Way to turn the country into a laughing stock and encourage our enemies.
Sheeeeeesh.

When working as an editor, I have all too often had to scrounge visual materials from the internet when my producer was unprepared... This story sets my heart free.

"Can we please just leave Gen. Petraeus alone? "
Flynne, I know where you're at... here's the thing, though. When you get a clearance, they absolutely beat it into your heads: "You have information that our enemies want. They will try to proposition and trap you." I had a discussion with a friend yesterday: "Was Patraeus set up?" He may have been -- but it doesn't matter because it should have been an easy trap to see and avoid. If you have a clearance, there are no excuses for getting caught in something like this. None. And what makes it worse is that this gal apparently is a psycho, and had extraordinary access. We don't know anywhere near the whole story yet, and I have a feeling it's going to get much, much uglier.
Cousin Dave at November 13, 2012 7:53 AM
I know, Cousin Dave, I know. It's just, Iono, I'm just so freakin' disappointed, I guess. And I believe you're right, it's going to get much uglier, since more people are being dragged into it now. Two big generals, trying to appease and placate a couple of lunachicks. Although Cridmeister's link provides some much-needed comic relief!

@Crid: "Let's each of us promise that next time we hear someone say 'we have to invest more in education,' we'll punch the guy right in the mouth."
Promise granted. I took my middle daughter, now a high school junior, on a campus visit yesterday. To your plea let us add the following: When somebody makes the lofty assertion that a college education is an investment, gently, or sneeringly, remind that person that investments are expected to amortize.
Now, to lighten the mood, we saw the latest Bond movie over the weekend. But that's not the only action picture I want to see this year.

What momof4 said.
Spend it on whatever you like. But when you're able to use your entire monthly allotment of food stamp money for a single gourmet meal without worrying about starving the rest of the month, you aren't really in need of food stamps.

From the article: "...I’m not going to do the ‘living off ramen’ thing...."
What if I don't want to do the "buying him salmon" thing while I'm having to do the "living off ramen" thing?
The fact that he says with such certainty that he's not going to live off of ramen (at someone else's expense) gets to the heart of the problem.
He doesn't say it with the determination of someone willing to work any job he can get to support himself. He says it with the sheltered certainty of someone who knows that mommy and daddy (or their substitute, the government) wouldn't make him do something so degrading.
After all, he's entitled to a good meal (an excellent meal from the descriptions in the article). Right?

I feel badly for Petraeus. My husband worked for him in Iraq and I think he was an honorable man, which is probably why he resigned.
The Obama administration has the FBI on a leash, and could have buried this if they wanted to.
If they fired every man who ever stepped out on his wife, most of the top levels of the government would be gone.
As far aa the security clearance thing. Remember Broadwell most likely had a TS clearance as an MI LTC.
She was also privy to a lot less of Petraeus's personal business than Holly Petraeus, who as a wife, would have no security clearance at all.
This in my opinion, is a tempest in a tea pot and the FBI is WAY out of control.

> Oh maneschewitz
Man-a-something... Check out the arms on that 'broad'! A woman with guns like that sticking out of a sleeveless dress is trying to prove things to people. She calls to mind Paglia's comments about Michelangelo's Night, composed in the days when men had to model for women's figures in art, because of, y'know, reasons: "Who would care to suck such sour pippins?"
Now, we can all agree that Paula is probably a very nice woman in person, and....
Fuck that. These people are demented.
There's no sexual perversion in Hollywood and none in New York City to compare to the insanity that's foaming the mouths in our nation's capital this week. The people who cheated on their spouses, the people who exposed them, the people who are taking advantage...
It's as despicable as Western Culture can be. Don't kid yourself, the United States still leads the globe.

Quite frankly this is to distract everyone from Benghazi.
The e-mails from Broadwell to Kelly went out very early in 2012. If they were investigating Petraeus Mueller (FBI) was saying something to Holder (AG). Holder not saying that they were investigating Petraeus to Obama is either criminal negligence or deliberate malfeasance. Either of which are impeachable offenses by the House and Senate against the AG.
The House has to lay charges. The Senate needs to prosecute them. Democrats impeaching their own party. Get real.
