Has Word Of The Streisand Effect Not Reached The White House?
From Wikipedia:
The Streisand effect is the phenomenon whereby an attempt to hide or remove a piece of information has the unintended consequence of publicizing the information more widely, usually facilitated by the Internet....It is named after American entertainer Barbra Streisand, whose attempt in 2003 to suppress photographs of her residence inadvertently generated further publicity.
There was a photo of Obama apparently skeet shooting -- a photo which the White House forbade messing with:
The photograph may not be manipulated in any way...
Predictably, for anyone who knows of The Streisand Effect, there probably has yet to be a photo of Obama that has been so messed with.
My personal favorite, from a Facebook friend's feed:
i linked this over at Paterico's place, where he is collecting worthy shops...

If you think any gun law this man backs will keep HIM from possessing one, you are sorely mistaken.
Meanwhile, the Sandy Hook choir sings at the Super Bowl, and some kid is honored for being someone who plays outside for an hour a day.

A letter posted in the Newtown Bee, from someone who actually lives in Sandy Hook:
Elected Officials Are Fundamentally Dishonest
To the Editor:
This letter was forwarded to Barack Obama, John Boehner, Chris Murphy, Dick Blumenthal, Elizabeth Esty, and Harry Reid
I live in Sandy Hook, CT. My family and close friends weren't harmed on December 14. That day impacted 26 families with an indescribable, staggering pain and anguish. For most of Sandy Hook, it merely affected us with an inescapable intensity of sadness and grief.
Gun control has long been a focus of many in this country. Though I'm not knowledgeable of all the nuances of the Second Amendment, based on the Founding Fathers' circumstances, it had far more to do with enabling the citizenry to protect themselves against tyrannical government than against local psychopaths. It is about providing a balanced firepower so when King George's successor came knocking on your door, you could fight back. Government today is no less inclined to abuse its authority than it was then. Based on the absurd and ongoing power grab that is present day Washington, it's as threatening as ever.
That so many of you view the NRA with its resistance to further restrictions on firearms as intransigent lunatics has far more to do with how you conduct yourselves in office than it does with the NRA's actions.
You in public office are fundamentally dishonest people. You lead lives of deception at every turn, structuring your lives as comfortably as you can while governing with an indifference and arrogance that is absolutely maddening. When the country is reeling from financial disaster, you waste a trillion dollars on a health care bill we can't afford and you've never read. You claim it's critical because health care costs are killing this country... no they're not, you are! You are killing this country. You endorse the ongoing slaughter of millions of unborn children and whine when terrorists are water boarded. You can't lecture us right in Newtown High School about not doing enough to keep our children safe, while simultaneously slaughtering the unborn. You fabricate the intense, media laden drama of the fiscal cliff and lack the courage to do anything about truly reforming the obscene gluttony of government. You know you'll be out of office before the bill comes due… you don't care and have no integrity nor honor.
You lie whenever and wherever you need to to move forth your agenda. Were you able, you would purge the US of guns… every last gun in the country, if you could. So please forgive Wayne LaPierre and those of us who don't trust you as far as we can spit. You're a dishonest lot, motivated by a distorted worldview. If mass murder prevention were truly your goal, you would welcome armed security wherever needed. It is outrageous that we protect our money with far more firepower than we protect our children.
I have never owned a gun, nor wanted to as intensely as right now. You'll stop restricting guns when only you have them.

Obi is a piece of garbage. How many US embassies/consulates were attacked over the last 6 months? How many were afforded protection? Now these jokers are talking about protecting the boy scouts and football players. I really thought Bush II was the lowpoint...there's not much reason to stay in the country anymore, I am so disappointed.

Right, Stinky? And check THIS out (my BF just sent it to me):
A Ford Dealer's Report
This is exactly why 40 some % of the people are too dependent on the government. They have learned to work the system.
This is why the U.S. is almost broke! Welcome to Socialism!
A Ford Dealer's Report - From Tom Selkis' (Latham Ford) Facebook - True story yesterday at the dealership.
"I'll try to make this as short and to the point as I can.
One of my salesmen here had a woman in his office yesterday wanting to lease a brand new Focus.
As he was reviewing her credit application with her he noticed she was on social security disability.
He said to her you don't look like you're disabled and unable to work.
She said well I'm really not. I could work if I wanted to, but I make more now than I did when I was working and got hurt (non-disabling injury).
She said the gov't sends her $1500.00 a month in 1 check. And she gets $700.00 a month on an EBT card (food stamps), and $800.00 a month for rent.
Oh yeah, and 250 minutes free on her phone.
That is just south of $3500.00 a month.
When she was working, she was taking home about $330.00 per week.
Do the math and then ask yourself why the hell should she go back to work.
If you multiply that by millions of people, you start to realize the scope of the problem we face as a country.
Once the socialists have 51% of the population in that same scenario, we are finished.
The question is when do we cross that threshold, if we haven't already, and there are not enough people working to pay enough taxes to support the non-working people? Riots?? Be prepared to protect your homes.
She didn't lease the Focus here because the dealer down the road beat our deal by $10.00/month.
Glad to know she is so frugal with her hard earned money."

MarkD,
I presume you mean the yellow form question about drug use and addiction.
ASSuming he isn't presently using drugs and isn't addicted, he can purchase firearms legally, regardless of his use of drugs in the past.
I looked up the actual law and decided to shoot my mouth off before I read the entire thing.
Besides, I doubt he actually owns the shotgun: most likely, it's government owned for use at Camp David (if in fact that's where he was when he was using it so adroitly).

Flynne at February 4, 2013 7:24 AM
The Chinese do not actually hold that much of our debt, because they got smart and started unloading it a while back. We owe nearly as much to Great Britain as we do China. Most of our $16.3T debt is owed to the Social Security trust fund and the Federal Reserve bank, not to mention all those individuals and companies that hold US Govt paper in their investment portfolios.
The Fed is buying 70% of our issue now, which is backed by our very currency.
That said, in terms of office buildings, properties, real estate, companies, and whatnot, I have no idea how much/many is owned by the Chinese government or Chinese individuals.

"Cat lasers were what brought down the Soviet Union. Little known fact."
It's clear from the photo that the President is on a shooting range and not under battle duress, as he is using the slower but more accurate ring-sighting method over the fast-acquiring but less accurate tail-to-ears battle sighting method.
If you've got the luxury of time (e.g., not being shot at while you're acquiring the target), that ring sight is the cat's ass for accuracy.

david foster at February 4, 2013 11:28 AM
Um, that's the trouble with the internet, sometimes people don't know when you're being sarcastic.
Let me explain:
The White House puts up photos on the internet. They want news outlets to be able to use those photos. Legitimate news outlets won't use photos without permission. (Despite what many people believe, you can't just use any picture you find on the internet without permission.) At the same time, they don't want people to use it for commercial purposes, for instance, they don't want a gun shop to use the photo above (or the original) in an advertisement. So you put up a simple notice. For something created by government entity, it's remarkably non-legalese.
The main point being, if they didn't put up a notice explicitly granting permission to use it, major news outlets would not be able to use it.
clinky at February 4, 2013 2:54 PM
As I recall, Amy, you once had an encounter with the stuck-up, snooty Ms. Streisand, who apparently had an issue with your confirming her knowledge of a certain Jewish tradition.

Flynne, that Ford dealer story is likely a hoax. I knew someone who made good money (more than the person in the story), was disabled and after a couple of years finally got Social Security disability at less than $1,000 a month. She also got less than $50 a month in food stamps, and the county subsidized her rent a bit under Section 8, but everything she received was well under $1500 per month, never mind all the other stuff.

I'm going to go with the Snope's assessment: undetermined.
Doing the quick calculator my SSDI would be $1,873.00 a month. That is not including a state supplement. Most people on SSDI automatically qualify for EBT and Medicare or Medicaid. The Section 8 housing is also almost automatic as well.
My lady was on SSDI for the last 5-7 years of her life. We never married for various reasons even before her health went downhill. So I have seen from the inside how the system works and can be worked. She honestly needed it and deserved it. But that someone abusing the system to that extent, I can easily believe.
And then there are the people that are complicit in scamming the system. She had the early food stamp (EBT) card. I mentioned it to one of the housekeeping staff at a job I worked at the time. He said he would pay people 25¢ on the $1.00 to use if for the month. That is even before the current situation that C-Stores will reprogram cigarettes and alcohol to register as food items so you can use an EBT card to by them.
I'm sure there are slumlords that will rent a $400 apartment for $800 and split the extra $400 with the renter for Section 8.
But the majority of reason that people used to qualify for SSDI was long term injury sustained on the job[1] but the SSDI applications are rising on a steady curve.
But you have about 8M less[2] manufacturing jobs in the U.S. in roughly the same time frame.
Then add in that the Risk of Permanent Medical Impairment[3] in car accidents has supposedly been dropping as well. Or in other words the reason for SSDI should be dropping.
The economy has steadily sucked worse.
I'm not saying correlation and causation, but it is an interesting thought.

Clinky...the words beneath the photo say:
"This official White House photograph is being made available ONLY for publication by news organizations and/or for personal use printing by the subject(s) of the photograph. The photograph may not be manipulated in any way and may not be used in commercial or political materials, advertisements, emails, products, promotions that in any way suggests approval or endorsement of the President, the First Family, or the White House." (emphasis added)
Since the "subject of the photograph" is Obama, the literal meaning is that you can't use the photo unless you're a "news organization" or you're Obama.

Of course, this is tough noogies. As a production of the federal government, it is not copyrightable and is public domain. Anyone can do whatever the hell they want with it. (That is, until the next revision of copyright law, after which Disney will own it, along with the designs of the American flag and all commonly used cutlery.)
