Heather is right. And I was warned, when I spoke at the school, mainly populated by single-parented inner-city kids -- some of whom read at a 1st, 2nd, 3rd grade level in 11th grade, and not because they're retarded -- that I shouldn't really talk about the detriments of raising kids in a single-parent situation. I could say to wait, but explaining the real detriments in any detail was off-limits, as "most of these kids come from those kind of homes." It seems necessary to mention that this is a problem and why so it doesn't keep happening.
Sometimes, a toothless, arthritic seventh-cousin who never learned to read will tumble down off the mountainside just at the moment the baby's parents are killed in a collision with a street car in the town square... And even though the seventh-cousin never knew the parents, the seventh-cousin will get custody of their baby.
But we're almost always talking about fatherless homes.

Funny because it never happened to you.
Probably shouldn't have happened to anyone.

Heather column discusses the "stigma against stigma" and other stuff. Many chewy, flavorful factoids. Wonderful woman, the Mac.

Not "single-parent," single-mother. Don't kid yourself.
Jesus Christ, years and years of discussion and all you've learned is to defend prejudices more per-emptively.
