Regulators: "Shove That Uncooked S'More Up Your Ass, Bub!" (Trying For Yet Another Ban On Fun.)
From KMPH, "air quality regulators" are considering a ban on beach bonfires in LA and Orange Counties:
The South Coast Air Quality Management District staff presented such a proposal to the board on Friday. The California Coastal Commission has delayed voting on whether the city of Newport Beach can remove 60 beach fire rings because it first wants the AQMD to offer a recommendation about the pollution the fires create. The commission's staff recommends that the rings stay for the sake of preserving low-cost recreational facilities on the beaches.

The pollution the beach fires create...?
Wait, there's something that we know causes more pollution than pesky beach fires...
But we can't ban cars, now can we?
But all this talk about pollution is good politics.

OK, the fires are already exempted. Why is there even a question?
And so they take the rings out. What if people just drag wood onto the beach without using a ring? So now you'll have have charred wood and ashes left at random spots on the beach.
It will also be sucking cops and the beach patrol into harassing people who just want to have a good evening out. Or even worse the homeless or beach bums who sleep there.
So what good will it do?

Ok, what the heck is going on, particularly in LA county with the AQMD and the new thing about not burning your fireplace when air quality is bad? My sister lives in Bakersfield and I know they've had designated no burn nights for years...which I thought was stupid the first time I heard it. I'm sure the no burn nights will be coming to OC anytime now.
The City of Huntington Beach tried getting rid of the firerings a few years ago. The reason then was because of all the accidents that happen in and around the fire pits and the lawsuits that follow. The idea was nixed then and the fire pits remained. I wonder if they're really looking for a way to get rid of expensive lawsuits.

There are tradeoffs in life and although I don't really go to the beach, it is one of the pleasures of life to sit around a campfire by the water. Are we really turning the sky here into that found around a coal plant by letting people roast marshmallows at the beach?

Not unless you have a magical solution to the sudden influx of riders on the local mass transit system?
You don't?

The Coastal Commission hates people, basically. They decided that their influence is now 5 miles inland--and none are elected, only appointed, so they are answerable to no one.

"They decided that their influence is now 5 miles inland--and none are elected, only appointed, so they are answerable to no one."
And another Constitution-free zone is created.
