Advice Goddess Free Swim
You pick the topics. I'm a little wiped out. Posted a couple of blog items below, but I'll post more on Saturday once I've had a little sleep.
Mind if I just do a little water waling instead of swimming I think the exercise would do me good.

When propaganda swallowing morons try to ridicule and demonize you about wanting to kill old people, women, children and other minorities because you are against the government take over of healthcare - please keep this article close at hand.
There are better ways to fix this system, but government intervention is a disaster that will disproportionately affect the poorest and most vulnerable Americans.
There is rhetoric and then there is reality.
I woke up this morning knowing my soon to be here daughter will not experience the quality medical attention she will deservedly earn in the future unless we can dismantle this reprehensible legislation.

In the past it was:
In the future it will be the federal overlords in Mordor on the Potomac and their sub-proctologists on fantasy island on the Hudson River commanding the 45% of debt slaves give it all to the recipient classes.
Maybe it is time for blood to be spilled. I'm not advocating it, but it is a recurring thought that is coming more often.

Gog,
Whenever I see an article like this I want to ask the author the question: "Who are the competing vendors for Halliburton? And what are their names?" Okay two questions.
Let's see the requirements:
I can't think of any others off-hand.
Yes Cheney worked for them. But I don't really remember Cheney going to the Senate Floor to cast a deciding vote; of course I could be mistaken.

Oh, I forgot to add:
I think we should give the contract to these people as vendors.

Sure do....
Let's not be politically selective though. There's enough to go round haliburton ain't the only game in town...

On the topic of government spending...
It looks like my sister-in-law might get laid-off. She works for a government funded program related to the county transit system. Because they are losing money they are looking at options. One is to eliminate the program, another is to sell it though that has issues, and the final one is to sell the management rights -- basically out-source it, this gets around some the issues with the sale. Anyway, it came to light that the one company looking at buying it or doing the out-source thing would pay the position my SIL has less than half her current salary, 2 weeks vacation (instead of 3) and a lot less in benefits.
It certainly seems my SIL position is way over paid compared to the rest of the market. Though I don't actual values.

Why is anyone's transportation a government function?

Since this is a free swim area, I want to mention the gun control politics, AWB, background checks and standard mags along with the Overton window.
Post Sandy Hook, the gun control crowd brought up their solutions: a new Assault Weapons Ban (AWB) which was totally useless the first time. No AR-15 was used in Sandy Hook. How would banning it really matter?
The next is limiting the size of magazines. The standard magazine for a 1911 .45 is 7 rounds. The "extended" is 8 rounds. The standard for a Glock is 10+ depending on the configuration. So limiting it 7 rounds as New York state is trying is effectively worthless. The Glock 19 9mm comes with a standard 15 round magazine. There is no such thing as a 7 round magazine, so you are making every Glock 19 owner a felon. Add in the fact that anyone who has ever been shot at has never said I wish I had less rounds.
The next one is the "gun show loophole" or lack of background checks. There has still been less than 1% of firearms bought at a gun show used in crimes. Most of gun shows are licensed FFL's that require a background check regardless of them being in their shop or at a show. So the private vendors are rare anymore.
So now we get to the Overton window. Per the Overton view there are acceptable changes to the laws. So effectively the NRA and enough of the population have shutdown the magazine and AWB bans.
So that leaves the additional background checks.
As I commented on another site: I’ll give them an expanded background check when they actually use the NICS system that is already in place. If they actually charged and prosecuted anyone who failed the background check, then I would believe it.
But really all the NICS system is doing is building a list of probable gun owners. Basically as soon as your FFL calls in with a 4473 form, they can now create a record that you had a NICS check. Why are you having a NICS check? You are buying a firearm. If you believe that database is purged, can you sell me whatever drugs you are taking to believe that fantasy.
Then add in that most of the NICS denials are later approved.
But there were 500+ murders in Chicago last year. How many of them went through a NICS check?
The fed is using the Overton Window to get deeper background checks. I don't trust the government to start worth. Do I want them knowing more about me?

Hey - when did they get their start, and what Administration was in office at the time?

Yeap, I did. BTW, can you list any of the competitors. What about feebiie's mention of the URS Corp that is partially owned by Ms. AWB Frakenstein?
But I know I'm biased.
