Modest April Fool's Day Proposal On Closing Gender Gaps, By Jesse Marczyk
New Mexico State University ev psych post-doc Jesse Marczyk posts at Psychology Today about how "large numbers of women who are otherwise qualified and eager for the jobs they are denied by society":
One good for instance would be the field of construction, where the workforce is almost entirely male. Faced with such a clear gender gap, one can only be left gasping, wondering what steps our government and society are taking to remedy such obvious sexism. It's not like women are too incapable or incompetent to build houses, after all.Women's worries don't end with the field of construction, however: similar gender gaps are seen in fields like plumbing, lumberjacking, and firefighting. As we know that the sexes are born completely equivalent to one another in terms of their physical potentials and psychological interests and motivations, these gender gaps can clearly only be the result of sexist socialization. Dismantling the sexist social constructs of our culture - constructs which were clearly created by men in the first place - is required if we ever hope to see the 50/50 split between men and women who are willing and able to fix your septic tank that we've all been dreaming about.

Horsehockey! I worked for an electrician in the late 70s/early 80s as an apprentice. I worked for the company for 2+ years and had to go to a vo-tech as well. I couldn't do the math. I can wire in series and in parallel, but I can't do square roots to save my life. Then, in late 81, I think it was, the company went into foreclosure and we all got laid off. Kinda sucked, but then I got a job at the post office. Which was good at first, but once they put me on the overnight shift and I had to deal with asshole managers of epic proportions, I left that job. Back into the office, but it seems I'm really good at office management, and I don't have to deal with being out in the elements all day. Which, when I was younger, wasn't a bad thing. I like what I do now. But I can rewire my whole house if I need to, and I'm pretty good at putting up drywall and painting. Just don't want to do it for a living. I can also change the oil in my car, change a flat tire, and I once replaced the starter in my Gran Torino (302 with a 2-barrel. Man, I miss that car!). We can do pretty much anything guys can do, and likewise they can do pretty much anything we can ('cept birthin' dem babies!). The "gender gap" isn't really all that big a deal that some people want to make it.

Whether it's sincere or not——
Twenty years ago I wrote to an alliance of female firefighters, I forget which one offhand, to ask what percentage of volunteer firefighters were women. The nice lady who answered my letter said no numbers were available, but she would guess maybe 3%.
So, not 50%. For volunteer firefighting.

Unfortunately, our erstwhile and illuminated Justice Department is fighting to eliminate this "gender gap" through onerous and irrational regulations and lawsuits.
Thereby being politically correct, and wasteful at the same time. And they aren't limited to April 1st. Every day is April Fools Day to these hacks.

I realize what day it is. However, I'd like to mention something anyway.
Men's rights' activists (MRAs) really do like to complain about "the glass floor." That is, the fact that women don't fight that hard to do "their share" of the dangerous jobs such as firefighting and lumberjacking. Aside from the fact that, as anyone who saw the movie "North Country" knows, men aren't that nice to women who DO aim for those jobs, the MRAs - and men in general - don't seem that eager to do "their share" of safe, pink-collar jobs that pay slave wages. Even those men who don't have kids to feed.

Feminist-type women love to look up and complain about a fictitious "glass ceiling," all while obliviously walking over the men who mostly occupy society's dirty, unpleasant and dangerous cellar under the "glass floor."
Femirrhoids crow that a woman needs a man like a fish needs a bicyle. A particular man, maybe. Without men in general, however, fuggedaboutit!

I worked briefly in electrical construction. I often thought about well-dressed women working in high-end jobs in the buildings I helped create, and how they mostly snub men like myself... but, they would not have nice places to work if it weren't for us!
