Obamacare Will Make Health Care More Expensive For A Lot Of People
Andrew Malcolm posts at IBD:
Remember how since-demoted House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said we'd have to pass the massive ObamaCare health law to find out what's in it?Well, now three years later that's happening and a lot of people are not liking what they see.
Remember how ObamaCare was going to save you money?
Not going to happen. Premiums are going up, some by as much as 100%. And a new study by the nonpartisan Society of Actuaries finds that on average insurers will have to pay 32% more for claims under ObamaCare.
Remember how ObamaCare was going to cover more than 44 million uninsured Americans?
Not going to happen. As the immense law and its 86-inch tall stack of new regulations roll out, millions of Americans will remain uncovered, even if the troubled, challenged law works flawlessly, which it hasn't. And won't. The latest Congressional Budget Office estimate is that even with full implementation, more than 30 million Americans will remain uncovered by the so-called Affordable Care Act.
Remember how ObamaCare was not going to add "one single dime" to costs?
Not going to happen. The Congressional Budget Office estimates ObamaCare will add $1,300,000,000,000.10 to the costs of the nation's healthcare. Obama masks this with new taxes, of course, and shuffling monies around within government programs, including cuts to Medicare.

Here's Richard Kirsch in HuffPo on health care for low-wage workers like fast food workers, many of whom are likely to pay a fine and stay uninsured:
Last week, the Wall Street Journal reported that Wendy's lowered its estimate of the cost of Obamacare for each of its restaurants by 80 percent, from $25,000 a store to $5,000. The hamburger chain figured that many of its full-time employees, who will be offered health insurance through the company, will turn down the coverage because, as the Journal reported, "they can get insurance through Medicaid or a family member, or because they prefer to pay the penalty for not having coverage." That penalty starts at $95 a year, although it will go up to $695 by 2016.Wendy's isn't alone. Several other fast food chains have come up with similar estimates. One example is Popeye's, which figures that since only 5 percent of its employees have signed up for the high deductible plan now offered at a price of only $2.50 a week, few workers will choose to pay an estimated $25 a week for the improved coverage it will offer under Obamacare.

Call me a cynic, but I pretty much expected Obamacare to implode, by design. Those who designed it really want full takeover of heathcare by gov't, You can't have that if the intermediate step works.
I just think that the Dems pushing it thought they would be in a much better place politically when it imploded than they are now.

This "law" was not designed as a "price control". It was designed to give uninsured access to insurance, thus those who have insurance will overpay. The "control" would be the next step.

so... Obamacare actually HURTS the working poor? Why am I not surprised? And they'll still love him for it, because he tried... or something. There's a name for this syndrome, prolly.

You peasants simply do not understand. You were born to work, not to think.
• ObamaCare was going to save money.
Yes, and it is saving money, compared to what you would have paid otherwise.
• Your premiums were going to decrease.
And they are decreasing, compared to the outrageous costs you would have paid in just a few years.
• Obamacare was supposed to insure the 44 million uninsured.
14 million additional will be insured immediately. The law is working. Only fools expect perfection in life.
• ObamaCare was not going to add "one single dime" to costs.
Indeed, it saves big compared to the alternatives. You just don't understand economics.
• Higher costs are masked by new taxes, cuts to Medicare, and shuffling money between government programs.
That is called proper governing. Savings in Medicare, reallocation of funds to more efficient programs, and somewhat more tax from those who can afford it. Would you want to leave everything as it was? That would be reactionary policy, even bigotry.
• You were supposed to keep your doctor and health plan.
It isn't our fault that indifferent employers (who would sell their grandmothers for a dollar) have removed your benefits, and that greedy, highly paid doctors are quitting their social responsibilities. The penalties are too small; we were too kind and trusting. This can and will be easily corrected to "nudge" people into doing the right thing. There may have to be widely publicized examples. Every omelette requires cracking some eggs.
• Obamacare will make things worse.
You are unduly upset because you do not see the future as clearly as government does. Life will ba a utopia compared to what it would have been without our changes to policy. Yes, it may seem to get worse for a while. We can't fix 40 years of capitalist error and misallocation in only a few years. You will be amazed at the results in 15 years, how much better things will be compared to what they would have been.
Consider that we have already created or saved millions of good jobs. You think things are bad, but they would have been catastrophic without our efforts. You are lucky to be alive and not starving, all due to our sacrifices in government and our reallocation of funds from the indifferent, lucky rich to the deserving, voting poor.
• This is sarcasm, right?
To us progressives, this is the Gaia's honest truth. It is the clear, dispationate, rational, evidence based, simple truth, as we see far into the future. You can barely see past the junked car on what you call a lawn.
Millions of people participate in government every day. Do you think your individual brain can comprehend the magnificence of it all? Do you really value independence more than cooperation? Would you rather starve than help? Do you barely comprehend what it takes to build a road, supply water and sewers, and take away garbage for recycling? Without government, you would die in a day or two. Three at the most.

@Andrew_M_Garland With the increase in insurance premiums, at the lowest level, I added the numbers which came to almost $7000 a year for those not in perfect health.
This is based on my old 80% plan with a cap and I have to pay $3000 out of pocket before it kicks in and pay out of pocket for all my medication.
This isn't a fix, it is forced pay by people who don't make enough to pay already and those people qualify for charity assistance. The road argument is a poor one, that comes out of general local, state and federal taxes and is a very small amount not $580+ a month.

Now, Andrew_M_Garland, how about we stop this insurance thing and go with a tort reform which easily doubles costs and coverage plan for those who can't afford it, like a modification of medicare.

Here's one I just heard about tonight.
The current system uses ICD-9 codes is sort of the Dewey Decimal system. An ICD-9 code of 845.01 means Deltoid (ligament), ankle Internal collateral (ligament), ankle with a separate code to indicate left or right.
With the incoming ICD-10 codes it would be something like S93.01XD. But the subcode is now what caused it such as ice, skateboard, running, etc. So then after enough skateboard sprains they won't cover the skateboard sprains as high risk. Now you have to pay out of pocket because too many. It is no longer covered.
Just think of the implications.
