Dolls Of The World Of "Everything Is Racist"
Apparently, there's a backlash against the (very pretty) Mexican version of Mattel's "Dolls of the World" as "racist."
Apparently, the problem is that the Mexican doll includes a passport -- just as all the rest do.
From Huffington Post:
Bloggers including Laura Martinez have protested the inclusion of a passport at all, suggesting that making special reference to the doll's documentation is offensive. On Cafemom's The Stir, blogger Adriana Velez called the entire set a "missed opportunity" to teach about real cultural diversity.
Complaining that the Mexican doll's costume was not only old-fashioned, but also inaccurate, she suggested alternative accessories like "a white blouse with colorful embroidery and a woven shawl."
"[A]ll girls deserve dolls that enlighten them, not that talk down to them with this half-assed ethnic tourism," she wrote, adding that a hairless dog -- or even a Mexican bass guitar -- would have been a more appropriate prop than a Chihuahua.
...National Hispanic Foundation for the Arts chairman Felix Sanchez sounded off more generally to Fox News Latino about the "dated" images projected by the dolls.
In an online announcement last June, when Mattel relaunched a group of the Dolls of the World principal designer Linda Kyaw noted that she had never been to Mexico when she designed the Mexican doll.
Responding to complaints on Twitter, the company wrote: "Mexico Barbie is 1 of 100 Barbie Dolls of the World. Current dolls wear a country-inspired outfit & have a passport & animal."
Mattel says they consulted the Mexican Embassy on the design for the doll and the inclusion of the chihuahua -- in case anyone is looking for the right place to target their blame. Racists! Racists!
P.S. Where are the howls of protest that, unlike Malibu Barbie, all women who live in Malibu are not blonde and tanned?

Muslims complained not too long ago that Barbie was a plot by the Jews to push Jewish women and Jewish ideals of beauty onto young impressionable Muslim girls. So in response they made their own shitty Barbie complete with a hijab.
That anyone would think Barbie is a representation of Jewish women...it is just freakin hilarious.
Also I'd like to point out that for a while in fashion black girls & latinas were obsessed with Barbie. They would call themselves "Barbs", "Barbie", "Black Barbie" or "Teresa" (that was the name of the Latin Barbie). Not sure why Barbie is so popular with black girls and black gay guys, I think it's in part to Nicki Minaj who dresses like one.
So as to the doll....they could have made the doll pale as there are Mexicans that look like that. Why does she have to have tanned skin? Are we all brown? My joking aside....
I love the doll, especially the little Chihuahua.

"adding that a hairless dog"
If they mean the Mexican hairless dog of the Aztecs, I doubt little girls would be too interested in doll with a dog that looks like a burnt rat.

"she suggested alternative accessories like "a white blouse with colorful embroidery and a woven shawl.""
I believe there's been four different Mexican Barbie dolls dressed exactly like this, both as part of the DOTW line and unrelated to it. Must every doll look exactly the same for this lady to be satisfied, or did she simply fail to do as much as a google image search?

Some people cannot be bothered with more information when they're busy being offended, and making sure everyone knows it.
I, personally, am offended by all the non-milk 'milk' products cluttering up my supermarket (nod to Lewis Black - it's JUICE!), but if YOU want to waste YOUR money, more power to you.
drcos at April 13, 2013 5:39 AM
Forget the dog. Forget the dress. If they want something to be mad at, that doll looks like a spaniard, not a Mexican.
kenmce at April 13, 2013 6:55 AM
Yes, it's just sooooo offensive to suggest that a Mexican woman would actually use a passport to enter the U.S.

Also, I would like to nominate Ms. Alkon (and her fuzzy little dog too) as the model for the next generation American Barbie doll.

The dress reminds me of the ones my friend's daughter wears to ballet folklorico except the dresses for dancing are a bit fuller. Yes, it would represent a more traditional look, but truly, if everyone dressed it a modern way, wouldn't the Dolls of the World all be wearing jeans and t-shirts?

it's a world of laughter, a world or tears / its a world of hopes, its a world of fear / there's so much that we share / that its time we're aware

Here are the 1st and 2nd edition Mexico Barbies, from 1989/96:

Fortunately Adriana Velez wasn't around back then to share her righteous outrage with the world.

I'm a Barbie collector. Barbie can't win. She is supposed to be a FASHION doll. whose purpose is to look beautiful in beautiful, sometimes fantasy-inspired fashions.
She is not supposed to look "real." She is not supposed to be a role model.
Modern-day Mexican women dress much like American women. (Same with Irish, German, Argentinian, and Thai women.) That doesn't make for a very interesting doll.
Insufficient Poison at April 13, 2013 10:45 AM
Well I think Barbie could be real.

"...a 'missed opportunity' to teach about real cultural diversity."
Sheesh. To some people, everything has to be propaganda.
Ken R at April 13, 2013 11:51 AM
Y'know, I just have to wonder about these people and how empty their lives must be, if this is something that they just HAVE to piss and moan about. It's a DOLL, people, a TOY. Grow UP already!
Sheesh!

I think it would be more realistic and also racist if she was pregnant and instead of a little dog it was a little boy selling chicklets...
Red at April 13, 2013 12:11 PM
@Jim P., hmm, I'd like to see some more evidence..., and maybe participate in a debunking session.
jerry at April 13, 2013 12:17 PM
It would also be racist if she didn't have a passport since all the others do (obviously Mexicans don't need a passport since they will just sneak in, or so will go the cries).
If they didn't include her in the line there would be cries of racism then too.
Of course if they hadn't done the line at all, cries of racism would and have been heard since all girls are not blond and blue eyed.
For everyone that has bothered to read my posts, here is the Barbie/GI Joe Nissan commercial from 1996: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uXdFKcETEPg
Joes dig redheads.

The Chinese doll also carries a little dog, but it's in a grocery bag.
Hello? Hello? Is this thing on?
Sosij at April 13, 2013 2:19 PM
Maybe serial killer Barbie is a lot less offensive to their dainty sensibilities?
prawn toe at April 13, 2013 2:54 PM
Maybe they should all just use this for their homepage and get it over with:

Oh for pete's sake! I just did a quick google search for "dolls of the world," and you know what? They are all a little "racist."
I mean, the Scottish doll is wearing a kilt, the Swedish doll is blonde with blue eyes, and the India doll has monkey on her shoulder - a freakin' monkey! Now, isn't THAT racist?!
Some folks look at anything just to find something "offensive" to get the knickers in a knot.
P.S., I'm with you in that this doll IS very pretty. And while it is something of a stereotype, I know that it would be true in my niece's case for she is still in that "everything must be pink" phase", that pink dress would just please so many little doll-age girls.
Charles at April 13, 2013 8:11 PM
Dara & Sara, dolls worth fighting over.
Crid [CridComment at gmail] at April 14, 2013 4:50 AM
Is this racist?
Jim P. at April 14, 2013 7:33 AM
I had Swiss Barbie growing up, and she looked nothing like any Swiss person I've ever seen. She did look a lot like the Swiss Miss girl from the cocoa can, though. I loved her, though, because she was Swiss. She came with Swiss francs. I kid you not. Evidently she was a banker or something.
NicoleK at April 14, 2013 11:44 AM
OMG I want a Dara doll.
NicoleK at April 14, 2013 11:15 PM
"My daughter prefers Barbies. She says Sara and Dara are ugly and fat,” said Farnaz , a 38-year-old mother"
Reminds me of why the ultra trashy Bratz dolls were so popular.
Ppen at April 15, 2013 3:40 AM
Nicole I want those dolls too! They are so cute and I love the traditional garbs.
Ppen at April 15, 2013 3:43 AM
Doesn't insisting the Mexican doll not have a passport reinforce the stereotype?
