You Can Buy More As A Star Than Mansions And Fancy Cars
I like the way Zach Galifianakis spends his money. He was friends with a woman who worked at his local laundromat, and when he found out she was homeless, he bought her a one-bedroom apartment.
This was just in the news because he took the woman, 87-year-old Elizabeth "Mimi" Haist, to the Hangover III premiere, as his date.
This sure beats news about stars showing us their hoohoos as they get out of limos.
Here's Mimi:

Don't these unemployed people get free housing and enough from social security and food stamps to manage especially if they are victims of circumstance rather than those who live on benefits by choice?
But I don't understand what rent he has to pay for an apartment that he has already bought.
Maybe she deserved more and Zach gave it. I always prefer quality over quantity anyday even in charity and I guess Zach also feels that way.

Ironically enough, to get government assistance, you have to already have a "residence". If you have a shit hole apartment with three kids and no job, no problem. If you're literally without a pot to piss in because you don't have a mailing address, your pretty much SOL.
Kudos to Zach for being more about humanity than his money. THAT's how you make a difference... one person at a time; not with huge benefit parties and press functions about the cause/disease/awareness campaign du jour. He won't get much acclaim for this, but I think it's a hell of a lot more telling of him that he does these things, on his own, without the fuss than the celebs who make thier "do-gooding" photo op's.

It's important not to look at those who fall through the cracks of life through the prism of the functional.

Wow, Redrajesh, negative much?

"not with huge benefit parties and press functions"
I've read most of those benefit parties operate at a loss and are more about hobnobbing.

"through the prism of the functional."
I love that. I will quote you in the future on that.
Most homeless suffer from mental illness, and a lot from PTSD from being vets. You can't ask them to rationalize basic functions or do them without assistance.
Case in point I remember i used to hate myself for being so lazy and unable to do basic functions, others thought i was a mooch. Turns out I needed anti-psychotics.

My friend Gary, who is now in Canada and has a roof over his head, is a talented artist and a hard worker. He's just not that good and the mundane stuff of life, like how you have to pay a traffic ticket before the due date or a giant, state-issued shitburger will fall on you like the house on the witch in the Wizard of Oz.
I, too, take medication -- Adderall -- as most people regularly commenting here know. Life without it? Imagine trying to think while being attacked by a flock of crows.

Ppen, I'm not asking for personal details, but are the drugs good? .... minimal side effects?

There are some really good guys and gals that work in and around Hollywood. But most of them shun the spotlight for their good deeds.
Harrison Ford is one. Tom Selleck and Gene Hackman are others.
I'm going to have to add Zach to the list.
Jim P. at May 21, 2013 7:28 PM
But were there any downsides?
