They don't just go missing-- the ranch country where my horses live seems to be a dumping ground for unwanted dogs.
I saw one of those missing dog posters, with all the five or six kids in the family. Lady, your dog RAN AWAY from home!

There was a Reader's Digest A Day in the Life piece from years ago: [paraphrased]
The couple had recently moved into a new house.
A dog came up and scratched at the door and he came in and just laid down on a rug in the sunshine and went to sleep for a few hours. This occurred for the next two days. They attached a note to his collar saying your dog is coming to our house to sleep.
The next day they get a note back "He lives in a house with five kids. He needs the rest."
