Murder Your Children, Make A Buck
Via @Overlawyered, Leatrice Brewer, 33, a woman who drowned her three young children in a bathtub in 2008, wants a cut of the $350K obtained by the children's fathers in wrongful death suits.
From the AP/NY Daily News story about the "mentally disturbed" woman:
Leatrice Brewer, 33, was found not guilty because of mental disease or defect in the deaths of her children, so her attorneys say she should not be subject to laws that bar convicts from profiting from their crimes.
This sure smells like lawyers going after a payday. It's times like this that I wish I believed in hell so I could believe these lawyers would soon be burning there.

If the mother killed the children, what third party had to ante up for that?

What's probably worse is that after lawyer fees, that $350K will look more like $35K, especially since there are two fathers paying lawyer fees, making for three sets of lawyers getting rich off of this.

The case drew attention to Nassau County's social services agency, whose caseworkers visited Brewer's apartment two days before the killings and found no one home, but neglected to schedule an immediate follow-up visit. Two social workers were later suspended.
Lawsuits against the county filed by the father of Brewer's 5-year-old and 18-month old sons were settled for $250,000. A lawsuit filed by the father of the 6-year-old daughter was recently settled for $100,000.

It seems the lawyers and the state are trying to steal the money from the dads to pay her bills. She has a lien of over $1,000,000 against her and will never see a dime. Absolutely disgusting.

What. The. Fuck.
*shakes head sadly*
The fact that the world is breeding people that have no problem representing this woman just shows how far we have fallen as a society.
Sad.
We should lock her and her lawyer in a room with a bathtub and see what happens. Just for kicks.

“It is a pleasant world we live in, sir, a very pleasant world. There are bad people in it, Mr. Richard, but if there were no bad people, there would be no good lawyers.” -- Charles Dickens, The Old Curiosity Shop
“Don't forget that we lawyers, we're a higher breed of intellect, and so it's our privilege to lie. It's as clear as day. Animals can't even imagine lying: if you were to find yourself among some wild islanders, they too would only speak the truth until they learned about European culture.” -- Yevgeny Zamyatin, February 01, 1884 to March 10, 1937
It is not a new problem.

This woman has the chutzpah of a kid who kills his parents and then begs the court for mercy . . .
(wait for it)
. . . on the grounds that he's an orphan.
Pops should just use the money that she's asking for to hire a hit man to drown HER in a bathtub.

" Animals can't even imagine lying"
Which is why I prefer them over people. I would rather spend a day with my dogs than a day with even my closest friends.
It might not be a new problem, but with more and more people being bred and more and more access to education, it's getting bigger all the time.
Who was it that said, "kill all the lawyers"?
