Today's Lesson: Dogs Can Fly
Aida, my tiny Chinese Crested, just did one of those action-adventure movie leaps from my desk chair to my plate of bacon on my desk. She was caught in the act before she could engage in the extremely criminal act of separating a girl and her morning's bacon.

Can't blame a girl for tryin'.

My Shiba is JUST tall enough to get her front paws on the table. You cannot leave anything up there unattended.

A while back I came home with a carload of groceries and a large Quiznos Philadelphia cheeseteak sandwich. In between me bringing in the groceries my dog Wally had grabbed the sandwich off the kitchen counter, run upstairs and wolfed it down. This is a dog who has never begged, but he knew exactly what he did.
You gotta love the look of guilt and mischief they sometimes give.

A dog that loves bacon? What could be better?

Being on a deserted Tahitian island with Halle Berry?
That is amazing though that your pocket sized dog is related to (up to) 400 pound evolved killers. Kinda like T-Rex's evolving into chickens. Makes you wonder what life will be like a million years from now.

Wolves, when not hunting, really enjoy playing amongst themselves and with the cubs. Non-alpha adults - which I think are typically the Alpha's siblings or older children - are often babysitters. I'm curious how animals in such small groups avoid genetic problems.
Scientists in Russia have turned foxes into dog-like creatures by breeding the most docile ones.

All her pics are cute, but I particularly like this one because she just looks happy. I got my first puppy/dog 5 months ago and it's been an interesting journey. He's not this small but fully grown weighs only 15 lb. I kind of wish we could all post pics of our dogs; having read about everybody's I'd now like to see them!

Lizzie, Daghain (posted above) has a picture of her shiba inu on her blog, along with info about the breed. They sound fascinating.
Daghain, thanks for posting the info about your cat and dog combo, and the breed. I was just talking to my partner about eventually getting a dog for our cat (and us, of course). From the description, the shiba sounds like a big dog in a small package, and that might have it work for us to adopt a dog sooner rather than later.
Michelle at September 7, 2013 9:57 PM
The shiba is a gorgeous dog; my neighbor also has one. I was unaware of the breed until then. My neighbor's Shiba is definitely bigger than my dog, about 25-30 lb. I would seriously consider the breed if I ever get another dog. He has a nice disposition and is absolutely beautiful.
I intended to get a Pug, Boston Terrier, or King Charles Cavalier spaniel. Instead I crossed paths with a Dachshund/Jack Russell mix, a sweetheart who needed a home. Life is what happens while you're making other plans.
Lizzie at September 8, 2013 4:06 AM
Oh, those plans. I am so glad my life looks nothing like I thought it would - and almost everything is better than I imagined it could be. Except for the part where I've now gone 4 years without a dog, and I don't see that changing any time soon.
My favorite breed is bigger - the Belgian Malinois. They are supposed to top out at 70 pounds, but our family had one that had been malnourised, hit 130 and settled in at 100 pounds. They are brilliant, strong willed, and funny. As much as I would love another, Inhink the shiba is relatively more portable at 30 pounds, and that one could do well in our yard on a day when my sweetie cannot fit a hike into our schedule.

Eric, thanks for the great link!
Michelle at September 8, 2013 9:26 AM
Shibas really are dogs for cat people. I think the cat is more of a dog than the dog is. There's a great rescue about 1/2 hour from me that buys the dogs out of auctions when the breeders are selling them and then adopts them out. Gets them out of the puppy mill system and I got a great dog in the bargain.

I just blew an air kiss at my computer because your puppy is that damn cute.
