New York Times Style Section Piece On Me And "Good Manners For Nice People Who Sometimes Say F*ck"
I lucked out. A funny, wonderful, and talented reporter, Brooks Barnes, did a piece on me for The New York Times Style section, and they sent a terrific photographer, Emily Berl, who took the shot of me marching across Main Street in Santa Monica.
One of my favorite parts was the very end -- but I don't want to give it away. Read the whole thing here.
It posted Friday night and will be in the Sunday Style section in the print version of the paper.
And if you haven't bought a copy of my book, please consider doing that. The book is discounted from the $14.99 retail price to only $9.48 at Amazon and $9.67 at Barnes & Noble.

Congrats.

Congratulations Amy. This must bring back good memories of the time you lived in New York.

It's a mild surprise that there's nothing discernibly back-handed about it, as we almost always see in NYT pieces about Los Angeles culture... 'Oh those nutty Californians!', etc.
Perhaps New Yorkers respond to your credible representation of Gotham's don't-fuck-with-me street manner... They recognize your Manhattan training.

I just read the article in this weeks nyt. You are my soulmate. My kids think I'm nuts because I often take pictures of what I consider "acts of shame" and want to post them somewhere. You are my idol.

It was a very pleasant surprise -- very much in the woah, cool! sense -- when I saw the very positive review in the WSJ come up on my iPad last week.
Reading the NYT review now ...
...
... Brilliant!
What comes through clearly in the piece is that most people are good electrons: we follow the past of least resistance. In the short term, that makes sense; in the long term, not so much.
In contrast you advocate a social space version of broken windows policing. More difficult in the short run, but pays off huge.
So far as I have read (I'm halfway through the book now) this article captures its essence, and the way you hold your own behavior up to critical examination, pretty darn well.
