A New Comedy From The Federal Government
The US Postal Service wants to deliver our groceries.
Or, as Adrian Moore, whose tweet led me to this story put it:
@reasonpolicy
Geniuses at the Postal Service going broke with monopoly on mail, so now they want to compete to deliver groceries.
Now, I have rented same house for, oh, 17 years. My neighbors have live in theirs a few years longer. Today, I got neighbors' mail and they got mine -- as we have about two or three days a week for, oh, 17 years.
From GovExec.com's Eric Katz:
The cash-strapped agency is looking to deliver groceries to homes in select metropolitan areas nationwide, as part of a pilot program it hopes can launch it back into the black. The program, which is pending approval from the Postal Regulatory Commission, would be called Customized Delivery.USPS would "provide delivery of groceries and other prepackaged goods," for the most part between 3 a.m. and 7 a.m. Customized Delivery would aim to build on "operational testing" the Postal Service started in conjunction with Amazon earlier this month in San Francisco.
Problem: My neighbors eat yucky.
Question: Do I try to persuade them to move or to eat more butter, bacon, and steak?

Problem: Food allergies (real and imagined).
This is gonna be fun to watch.

Where is the Constitutional authority for this?

First the garbage men in CA can write you tickets for what you throw away and now this?
I mean, it's almost as if the government is going out of it's way to stay at the top of the list for Late Night Show jokes.
They still can't get regular mail right. What on earth are they thinking?

Love to mock the postal service, but they are actually kicking butt in package delivery. Way cheaper than UPS. Fewer problems. Sunday delivery. Package tracking. Amazon seems to be using USPS for 90% of their shipments.

They are heavily subsidized by the taxpayer. I don't count that as kicking butt.
Where is the US is there Sunday delivery? I don't say there isn't such an animal, but like the Jackalope, it must be an extremely rare beast.
Their express service sucks, and I have had to go to the post office several times to chase down items that were supposed to be delivered to the door, or to my gunsmith, but were not. They just shoved a slip in the mailbox saying delivery was attempted, when I was sitting in my living room waiting for it.
I have had some success using their priority mail, with very small items, but if I cant afford to lose it, I always ship Fed Ex.

If I order something I know I'm unlikely to be home to get the delivery for I have it shipped to my mom's house, who is home all day pretty much every day until evening. I had a package not show up when expected and the tracking said delivery was attempted, no one home, signature required. They also didn't leave a package pick-up slip to notify her there was a package. If not for daily checking my tracking status online I never would have known and it would get sent back. When she went to the post office to get it they gave her a hard time because there was no slip to show proof of package (I sent her the email with all the shipping and tracking info on it) and it turns out no signature was required and they could have just shoved it in the mailbox anyway.
I'm sure if I were to order food it would be furry by the time I ever saw it.

I've gotten Sunday delivery from USPS when ordering from Amazon. I do a lot of subscribe and save (20% off).
Though a lot of times they don't even attempt and say they did (especially for heavy items). I almost never get a slip.
I have changed to send things to my in-laws as someone is there almost all the time. They seem to do it less to them than to us.
Amazon probably loses some money on the deal with us. One time something I didn't get and already received a replacement for finally came a month later. If I knew what it was at the time, I would have told the PO to send it back.
Another time, PO claimed a package was delivered. I told the retailer I never got it. After several emails, they finally relented and sent me a replacement. ONE YEAR later I get an email from them asking why did I send this package back. PO finally found it and returned it to the sender.

They don't have a monopoly, which is why they are losing money. E-mail,fax, online bill pay, FedEx UPS etc.

Bill O Rights: "They don't have a monopoly, which is why they are losing money."
With certain exceptions it's illegal for anyone except the USPS to deliver letters (i.e. a written message from one party to another) For more information Google or check Wikipedia for Private Express Statutes.

If the Post Office delivers groceries there'll probably be an increase in the percentage of compostable material that ends up in the garbage - a win for the City of Seattle and its garbage collection cronies.
