The Difference Between A Side Dish And A Doobie
This is apparently a little difficult to discern for the drug warriors in Georgia, who raided an okra grower thinking they were about to seize marijuana.
Jacob Sullum writes at reason that heavily armed deputies showed up at the home of retiree Dwayne Perry on Wednesday after someone spotted his okra plants from the air:
"They were strapped to the gills," Perry told the paper. "Anything could have happened." Fortunately, no humans or dogs were killed.

Scenario Fulfillment.
Is it reasonable to expect people in the grip of Bad Thinking, not attributable to mental illness, to perceive and reject the Bad Thinking? In other words, if the homeowner sues these idiot cops, can they use the We Had Our Heads Up Our Asses defense?

"We've not been able to identify it as of yet," he said. "But it did have quite a number of characteristics that were similar to a cannabis plant."
1. Stalks
2. Leaves - seriously, Okra leaves bear no resemblance to cannabis leaves
3. Green all over
I hope they don't literally go looking for "grass".

Years ago I was describing okra to a friend from Scotland, who was eating it for the first time at our home. He thought I was describing a marijuana plant.
But our LEO are supposed to be trained to know the difference. Particularly in our state, where a field of okra is not uncommon.

The article in Reason claims this was in Broward county - which does not exist in GA.
How many of their other "details" are wrong?

It is Bartow County. I suspect autocorrect. What minor part of a story do you need to be *wrong* in order to discount it?
Is there anything at all to indicate that a drug raid on an Okra garden didn't occur?

This is what happens when you let city slickers roam around in the country side.
If I were the homeowner, I'd insist that the officers involved go door to door thru the neighborhood and apologize to the neighbors for the ruckus they caused, and that they're slack-jawed, booger eating morons who can't tell okra from weed.

Well, now, guys, the initial material at advancebackgroundchecks.com doesn't show a Dwayne Perry in Cartersville. Evidently he is associated with some smaller berg around there.
Not saying the cops aren't stupid, but this illustrates a couple of things well: there is a difference between an information source and subsequenct commentary, and you are better off noting that reporting can contain errors than trusting them.

Yea, as IRA Darth Aggie says, city slickers.
Reminds me of the story not too long ago when someone tweeted about "rubber bullets' that were actually ear plugs.
And remember, these folks consider themselves to be our betters.

He thought I was describing a marijuana plant.
The leaves resemble marijuana leaves somewhat, but, yeah, they should know the difference. The weasel non-apology was dumb, too.

True. But that works both ways. The way the media covers drug prohibition, I'd argue that it makes for more fearful illusion rather than providing rational illumination. A *major* detail missing in news stories is that there are many different types of people who use/grow marijuana. Like alcohol.

Could be weirder.
The Texas Prayer Police could swarm your school seeking to arrest the girl who suffered a miscarriage.
Gog_Magog_Carpet_Reclaimers at October 4, 2014 5:58 PM
Okra leaves resemble marijuana to about the same extent that a maple leaf does.
There's a Rush song in there somewhere...
