Sounds more like it's a crime to prevent someone else from talking to the police. In other words, something else to charge the bad guys with in case we can't prove the actual crime.
I don't know what to make of this. No doubt this guy was singled out by the IRS for his political views. And it would not surprise me to find out that someone highly placed in the current (petty, small-minded, vengeful) Washington glitterati was involved -- there's a lot of Democrats and a fair number of Republicans that I wouldn't put it past. But Ron Wydon? He's been a pretty good champion of civil liberties, and has stood against his own party on government surveillance issues. That bit doesn't add up.

But according to the story the woman came out once the police identified themselves and claimed the two remaining children stayed behind voluntarily.
Which means they were charging him with not talking to them
