Asian Groups File Fed Complaint About Policy Of "Diversity" Over Merit At Harvard
Yamiche Alcindor writes at USA Today about a policy at Harvard of keeping Asians out in favor of "diversity":
A coalition of Asian-American groups filed a federal complaint against Harvard University on Friday alleging the school engaged in "systemic and continuous discrimination" against Asian Americans during its admissions process.More than 60 Chinese, Indian, Korean and Pakistani groups came together for the complaint, which was filed with the civil rights offices at the justice and education departments. They are calling for an investigation into Harvard and other Ivy League institutions that they say should stop using racial quotas or racial balancing in admission.
"We want to eliminate discrimination of Asian Americans, and we want procedural justice for all racial groups," Yukong Zhao, one of the chief organizers and a guest columnist with the Orlando Sentinel, told NBC News. "All racial groups should be treated equal."
...Robert Iuliano, Harvard University General Counsel, said in a statement that the university uses a "holistic admissions process" that is "fully compliant with federal law" to build a diverse class. He added that over the past decade the percentage of Asian American students admitted to Harvard College has increased from 17.6% to 21%.
"We will vigorously defend the right of Harvard, and other universities, to continue to seek the educational benefits that come from a class that is diverse on multiple dimensions," Iuliano said.
They aren't keeping the rich kids out to let the poor kids in, are they? "Sorry, Mr. Captain Of Industry. The fact that you put a wing on the hospital is immaterial..."
Asian-Americans vote for the party of the left. Asian-Americans get screwed by policies of the party of the left. Asian-Americans whine and cry. Why don't I feel any sympathy?

Because you know you're wrong and you're just trolling for a laugh?
FDR opened the internment camps in WWII. Nixon went to China in '72. John Yoo wrote Bush's torture justification. Korean grocers went armed to protect their property in the Rodney King riots. I went to a pro-Marcos rally in the '80s - all Filipinos.
Which Asian-Americans are you talking about?

When Middle Daughter was in the middle of her college hunt, we paid a visit to a large Mid-Atlantic state campus where a student guide proudly assured us that they used 24 different factors when considering prospective students and that a perfect SAT score might not be sufficient to guarantee admission.
That got my attention. It also suggested that with so many factors to consider, that school's admissions process was more-or-less arbitrary.
@Cousin: I like that kid, who basically said, "I might be good enough for the Ivies, but they, quite frankly, are not good enough for me."

"Holistic" = "we have no idea, we just hide how we do this and its effects"

Disagree with your poor/rich comment. If they let in rich kids NOT based on merit then um...why shouldn't they let in other groups NOT based on merit ?
Frankly I wouldn't go to a college that isn't diverse. If its all Asian or all white or all black I wouldn't go. But I didn't go to college anyways for other reasons like the coddling given to women, the debt it causes, finding a structured way of learning boring, it's given unmerited status (ironically)...so basically as a private act of rebellion.
There are better ways to give groups help and create diversity than by taking into consideration their race. It just causes resentment. But all in all I hope this is another nail in the coffin. Men aren't even going as much as women. That phenomena isn't solely explained by women given a gender upper hand in admissions.
College is now an expensive highschool diploma. It isn't in many fields but those are mostly being studied by immigrants.

Canvasback,
In 2008 Obama got 62% of the Asian vote. In 2012 Obama got 73% of the Asian vote. Asian-Americans are reaping what they sowed. I have no sympathy for their current plight as their votes consistently put into office the very people that screwed them over.

Well, they shouldn't be doing either one. (The "legacy" admissions are a nudge-nudge-wink-wink thing. One's success in gaining admission as a legacy student is directly proportional to how politically influential one's parents are and/or how much one's parents donate to the endowment fund.)
"College is now an expensive highschool diploma."
This. Indirectly, you can blame Griggs vs. Duke Power. That court decision eliminated most of the ways in which employers could evalute the suitability of prospective employees. A college degree then become a proxy for a person who had motivation and was willing to work towards a difficult goal. But employees-to-be soon figured this out, and from there, it was inevitable that it would devolve into credentialism. And the more students came to college just to get the piece of paper (and with easy availability of student loans), the more the schools catered to that, because it was more or less free money. And here we are.
