My First Thought Was That She Should "Identify" As An Asshole
First-person ooze in the Charlotte Observer, "The struggle to be taken seriously in the age of subtle sexism."
An excerpt:
I identify as female. I am apparently a conventionally attractive student-athlete at UNC-Chapel Hill. I grew into my ears a few years back. I have lighter eyes and darker skin, and with the exception of a bit of an eyebrow discrepancy, my face is generally symmetrical.Writing this now, I feel my stomach drop. In a culture that regularly exploits sexuality, it's ironically unacceptable when women openly acknowledge it themselves. But hear me. The following is a string of subtle and routine occurrences that make me feel less human and should take their rightful place among the larger narrative of sexism in contemporary America.
When I wake up at 6 in the morning for practice, I put on spandex that will ride up and allow my legs to chafe. I know this is because I don't have a thigh gap like most of the distance runners on my cross-country team. I eat an easily-digestible carb and make a note of the calorie count.
After "a good early-morning chafe," as I call it, I change into dry workout clothes, this time being careful not to wear too much "Carolina gear." I do this so as not to give my professors and peers another reason to discount me...
Oh, the horror...the horror.
Loved this comment on the story:

"Identifies as male" "identifies as female"? You know, you can have a DNA test done and it will tell you which gender you are so you won't be confused.
This guy, too:
Taff Zickefoose
I'm a 46 year old male and have also been a 'victim' of everything this sad pathetic girl gas described. It's called life. Deal with it.
P.S. I "identify" as extremely wealthy.

Her not being "comfortable w/in her own skin" is no one else's problem. Bet no one tells her that ever.
From a predatory point-of-view (sexual, political, feminist, whatever) she is a perfect target. Simply perfect. Just a matter of time and a few cups of tea.

It used to be that being this insecure was called neurotic, but now we aren't allowed to judge.
Everyone has insecurities and everyone looks funny in some way. Even body builders and models look odd to some. Yes, you can be "too pretty". People do not agree on standards of beauty except in the vaguest sense. The idea that the world should applaud and "acknowledge" you is simply nuts. The world doesn't care about you at all. Even movie stars get an ample supply of haters--just watch the "mean tweets" read by celebrities.

"The following is a string of subtle and routine occurrences that make me feel less human..."
Stay home in bed and shut up. That way you won't suffer any of this subtle and routine dehumanizing and the rest of us won't suffer from having your neuroses inflicted on us.
The Charlotte Observer must be really hard up for material.

They could have used a better picture. I can't see her tits.

"...in the age of subtle sexism."
Does the age of subtle sexism come before the age of microsexism? Or is it the other way around?

Newspapers around the country are going broke and they wonder why. Well, if you print dreck like this you have the answer. This crap would be what you you'd expect in some college newspaper not the daily newspaper of the biggest city in North Carolina. (By college newspaper I mean one at a small, expensive, oh-so-precious liberal arts college in the northeast.)

I won't be shedding many tears for you, deer. Not sure how much of your costs are covered by that athletic scholarship, but UNC is a very prestigious institute of higher learning. If you network properly, you'll be pulling down 6 figures in a few years.
I R A Darth Aggie at September 6, 2015 12:04 PM
That is the real story David. The day when all these idiotic and more significantly boring news paper writers go out of business can't happen soon enough.

So many things to be offended by. So little time to whine about them.

I just weep for all the time I wasted in college trying to graduate on time with good grades. Coursework and an internship, with a few hours on weekends for socializing.
I'm concerned about that for my kids too, but when her father brought that up when she announced the non-profit she was starting, it was just another sand of patriarchal oppression policing her gender.

I head to the gym to cross-train. I mount a sweaty elliptical.
Although I've seen much better, I liked her touch of gym porn.
I have to walk home with a friend who identifies as male because it’s dark out.
When the sun's out, he identifies as female and during twilight he's confused.

And instead of striking boldly explaining why all such sexism is bad, with an argument bound in strength...
She whines the weaksauce, and waits for some guy to neg her...
Oi. Embarassing.

You got the paper wrong. The link you give is to the Raleigh News and Observer, but you say it's from the Charlotte Observer. Two very different papers and cities.

I'd suggest she hop a plane to Somalia or the C.A.R. or the back side of some huge Indian megatropolis and report back in 24 months or so.
Gog_Magog_Carpet_Reclaimers at September 6, 2015 6:25 PM
Good lord that article was hard to read. There are only so many times I can read "identifies as" in a row. If she's being that careful, why didn't she make sure to identify as "cis" or other? Also, how does she know what gender these other people identify as? Does she ask every classmate?
People like her are why it's hard to take liberals seriously, and I AM one. Just a sane one, apparently.
Kimberly at September 6, 2015 6:25 PM
Beauty is such a damned curse. If she were ugly and angry, she'd have nothing to worry about.
justme at September 6, 2015 6:26 PM
Then the article would be about fat-shaming, or the unrealistic standards the media impose on us. People like her always find something to be victimized by.
Kimberly at September 6, 2015 6:45 PM
This woman needs to shop more, I'm fat with no thigh gap and can find plenty of non-chafing leggings, shorts, etc to exercise in.
NicoleK at September 7, 2015 12:49 AM
"...and can find plenty of non-chafing leggings, shorts, etc to exercise in."
That. Or use Body Glide. But then she couldn't wallow in self-pity about how dehumanizing it is to get chub rub while trying to stay fit.
And I'm not going to the full link. I don't want this idiot to get more page views.
