All of these 'peaceniks' have never never been in danger w/no help on the horizon. Impossible.
As a kid I was on my bike heading home from a softball game when a pack of medium size dogs came at me. They were bloody (found out later that they had killed a sheep) and not very friendly.
Saying "let's get along" did not get very far so I used my bat (nice big and heavy) like I was playing polo.
Took out the most aggressive (not the biggest) and the pack left.
Lesson: Better to be lucky and prepared than to be wishfully thinking "nice doggy".

I've found I prefer saying "Please don't ..." and being meek while getting my weapon of choice ready.
That plus my EVIL "Now I can come out and play." smile just throws 'em off guard.
(After all, if I have that much time things are not really that bad.)
