People who are unhappy with the things Trump is saying need to understand that he’s only getting so much traction because he’s filling a void. If the responsible people would talk about these issues, and take action, Trump wouldn’t take up so much space.
And there’s a lesson for our ruling class there: Calling Trump a fascist is a bit much (fascism, as Tom Wolfe once reported, is forever descending upon the United States, but somehow it always lands on Europe), but movements like fascism and communism get their start because the mechanisms of liberal democracy seem weak and ineffectual and dishonest. If you don’t want Trump — or, perhaps, some post-Trump figure who really is a fascist — to dominate things, you need to stop being weak and ineffectual and dishonest. . . .
"The Irish slave trade began when James VI sold 30,000 Irish prisoners as slaves to the New World. His Proclamation of 1625 required Irish political prisoners be sent overseas and sold to English settlers in the West Indies.
By the mid 1600s, the Irish were the main slaves sold to Antigua and Montserrat. At that time, 70% of the total population of Montserrat were Irish slaves.
Ireland quickly became the biggest source of human livestock for English merchants. The majority of the early slaves to the New World were actually white.
From 1641 to 1652, over 500,000 Irish were killed by the English and another 300,000 were sold as slaves. Ireland’s population fell from about 1,500,000 to 600,000 in one single decade."
"This practice of interbreeding Irish females with African men went on for several decades and was so widespread that, in 1681, legislation was passed “forbidding the practice of mating Irish slave women to African slave men for the purpose of producing slaves for sale.” In short, it was stopped only because it interfered with the profits of a large slave transport company."
"One British ship even dumped 1,302 slaves into the Atlantic Ocean so that the crew would have plenty of food to eat."
When you grow up in the post-capitalist economy, this is how you get it done. Whaddya know, some of those Milleannials really do have a work ethic. Even when they have to invent their own work.

The electoral college could still stop Trump, even if he wins the popular vote
Yes Bob. That all happened. Most of us have gotten over it. But we still call the British knobby kneed jackasses.
On a more serious note, when the British lectured the Americans on the evils of slavery it was from a position of tragic experience.
Cousin Dave, Millennials are a very bi-modal population. There are those who in the immortal words of Homers Simpson ask "Can't someone else do it?" And then there are those who don't want to take care of 'those lazy, good for nothing, jackasses'. Of course one side gets a lot more press.

Yep. But I think that's true of every generation. Back in my day, everyone called GenX a bunch of drug-addled slackers. But that didn't describe anyone I hung out with. We elected Reagan twice and drove a two-decade-long economic expansion. I rag on Boomers a lot, but there were Boomers who conducted sit-ins in the administration building, and then there were Boomers who toiled in mines and factories, fought in Vietnam, and executed the Apollo program.

Yes, I have. Here's what I posted last September:
in the 17th century, some Irish (and maybe some non-Irish political prisoners as well) were sold into slavery in the Caribbean. There's at least one movie about that: "Captain Blood," (1935) starring Errol Flynn. You can read more about that slave trade in the 2007 book "White Cargo" (not to be confused with the 1980s Stuart Woods thriller).

CD,
I get the feeling it was more uni-modal in the past. Nothing the millennials are doing is unique. I've known boomers and even GGs that fit the millennial stereotypes. I remember the GenX stereotypes and they never made any sense to me except as a media invention. But millennials really do fall into one of two camps. Either they are very hard working and conscientious or they are extremely entitled and lazy. There really isn't a middle ground. It brings to mind videos of the Vietnam war. Where you either had long hair and were a hippy or you cut your hair really short to side with the military. Very few people had hair in the middle. With millennials it is more a tribal thing than a natural population distribution thing.
Mind I'm not ragging on millennials. As I said many of them are great hardworking people. I've just noticed that after a few hours with one you can usually tell which tribe they belong to.
