Don't Be Admiring The Looks Of Movie Stars, You Hideous Sexists!
Silly Claire Landsbaum at NY Mag castigates us for finding a movie star hot.
She also goes after Steve Martin, who (if you pay attention to his writing, demeanor, and public statements) seems to be an extremely decent guy.
The subject -- as the headline of Landsbaum's piece puts it -- "Carrie Fisher Struggled Against Being a Nerd-Boy Sex Object Her Whole Life."
So remember Fisher for her immense talent, her outspoken feminism, and her moving commentary on mental health -- not for the way she looked onscreen.
Remember her for whatever floats your boat. And don't feel the slightest bit bad about it.
You can admire what she did since then (if you do admire her for that stuff) -- and still find her a sex symbol.
There's a reason they hired her for this movie and this role, and, no, it wasn't because she was a brilliant nuclear physicist or had interesting ideas.
P.S. This Cinnabon tweet was hilarious -- as was her hairdo in "Star Wars." Can we please stop all the constant joke policing?

Sayeth the headline: "Carrie Fisher Struggled Against Being a Nerd-Boy Sex Object Her Whole Life."
Rewritten headline: "Carrie Fisher Introduced Tough, Determined (and Stunning) Heroine to Millions of Nerd-Boys."
Sounds a little different that way, doesn't it? Of course, you can't hate on the nerd-boys when you say it like that. Hold them in affectionate contempt, maybe, but what fun is that?

I slightly knew Carrie Fisher and she liked having male fans. She also had no illusions about her acting talents.

"Carrie Fisher Struggled Against Being a Nerd-Boy Sex Object Her Whole Life."
Which is why her passing is being mourned by millions. Otherwise it would have been "Carrie Who? wasn't she in 'The Man with One Red Shoe'?"

When was Carrie Fisher an "outspoken feminist"?
And let's face it, as someone else pointed out, Carrie Fisher was not some immense acting talent. She got into acting because of her parentage. She was hardly some struggling actress who clawed her way in. She had a foot in the door.

I'm not a Star Wars fan, though her character is pretty much inescapable in modern America, so I don't know about her acting. But she was a good writer and a damn good epigrammatist with genuine wit.
One quote that didn't get reprinted much: "As you get older, the pickings get slimmer, but the people don't."
Kevin at December 28, 2016 10:53 AM
One more thought for Claire Landsbaum: this is why you got Trump.
We're not (yet) a Marxist utopia where there is exactly one way to mourn a hero of the Revolution. Who will eventually be denounced and airbrushed from history.

"Whilst you were in nappies, I was an activist for my LGBT community as a university student. We were different - we recognised difference, didn't profess to know everything, and respected our elders. You are part of the force pushing new progressives farther to the right. You disgust me. Piss off."
Loved this comment from that article.

And, having read some of her books and seeing what a great sense of humor she had, I think she'd like it too.

Love that shot, Six. Want that outfit!

I never thought Carrie was particularly beautiful in the Hollywood generic way you know? Which to me made her a more interesting and better Princess. I can't picture anyone who looks like a young her being cast now---such a shame.

From 1990:
"What is a pretty woman? What is a beautiful woman? What is a gorgeous woman?"
Emily Spencer, Crown Point, Ind.
"A pretty woman is one who turns the heads of the teenage boys as she walks by the bus stop. A beautiful woman is one who turns the heads of the men too. But it takes a gorgeous woman to turn the heads of the women."
Marilyn vos Savant.
Personally, most of the time, I wouldn't distinguish between the last two categories.
But more importantly, the word "beautiful" gets overused. By definition, really, it means exceptionally attractive. Therefore, most women - even thin ones - cannot be called beautiful. Especially without makeup. (I don't know if any famous beach photos of Marilyn Monroe showed her without makeup, but if they never did, that would suggest she needed it, even in that context. One little boy who worked with her implied she was almost unrecognizable without it.)

And it was funny then, and it was funny now.
Thing is, even to a freshly-pimpled high school graduate on the day the film was released, her goofy hairstyle and artless gowns told the tale of the director's meager sensibilities: Lucas is not a guy who does sexual allure, erotic sophistication, or the eternal truths of women's fashion. We can imagine him signing off on the sketches during the Star Wars production meetings: 'Uh, yeah, John, whatever you say....'
...And then turning his attention back to the double-sunset composite. The buns looked fucking ridiculous.
It wasn't her grace as an actress that made her so beloved from a career-making role, and it sure wasn't her voice: It was a typically pretty face in its best years.

I don't know. Michael's 72, so it could be a another parent-child footrace to the grave. And Michael's recent bout with cancer probably hasn't don't him any favors in the longevity department.

Good point.
51.75 hours to the finish line. If Michael takes the ribbon, the charity of your choice gets $1000 of the quiet money, the green/leafy stuff.

The funny thing about Martins tweet it it showed he grew as a person to appreciate a woman for more than her beauty as he grew up
Think about that for a moment, he admitted he grew up, and that wasn't good enough
Growing out of hormone drive adolescence into a decent man wasnt good enough
No, his failure to be pristinely perfect from the moment he was born and every moment thereafter was an unforgivable sin.
