False Rape Accusations Never Happen -- Except When They Do
An 18-year-old woman accused two college football players of raping her. They had their scholarships revoked and surely went through a year of hell.
However, Joshua Rhett Miller writes in the New York Post that the men were cleared by police after their accuser recanted her story.
Nikki Yovino, 18, of South Setauket, NY, has been charged with second-degree falsely reporting an incident and tampering with or fabricating physical evidence in connection to an incident at a Sacred Heart University football party in October, the Connecticut Post reports. When pressed about inconsistencies in her original statement, Yovino admitted that she made up the rape allegations against the two football players in hopes of gaining sympathy from another man -- a prospective boyfriend, according to an arrest warrant affidavit.
...Both men admitted having sex with Yovino, but claimed it was consensual. Bridgeport Police Detective Walberto Cotto Jr. later questioned Yovino after other students said it appeared Yovino went into the bathroom willingly with the two men.
One student, according to the arrest warrant affidavit, said he overheard Yovino telling the men she wanted to have sex with them.
"She admitted that she made up the allegation of sexual assault against (the football players) because it was the first thing that came to mind and she didn't want to lose (another male student) as a friend and potential boyfriend. She stated that she believed when (the other male student) heard the allegation it would make him angry and sympathetic to her," according to the affidavit.
...Yovino, who was released after posting $5,000 bond, faces up to five years in prison if convicted on the tampering charge, a felony, the Connecticut Post reports.
One of the students has since been readmitted to the university, but he's no longer a member of the football team and lost his scholarship. The names of the students are being withheld by Hearst Connecticut Media and one of their attorneys told the Connecticut Post that he just wants to put the incident behind him.
This young woman thought nothing of ruining these two men's lives -- because it happened to serve her purposes.
She happened to recant. Consider that some false accusers do not.
And then consider the notion from some feminists that we should just take any rape victim at their word and not require any sort of proof.
Will some rapists get away with this as the standard? I'm guessing they will, and I think it's terrible.
However, what's more terrible is for an innocent person to be caged and/or have the things and opportunities they've earned yanked from them simply because the finger is pointed at them.

Surely you've heard that it is better to jail 99 innocents than to allow one guilty man to go free?

You'd think a friendly blowjob would have worked better.

Thank you for posting Yovino's name. This should always happen.

Well, the college just has to pay a judgment large enough to hurt, and being as colleges are drowning in money, that's going to be a pretty sum.
