As for the Charlie Martin insurance article in PJ Media that Darth linked to, it's a good explanation of basic insurance math. What he was (I think) trying to touch on, but didn't actually say: there was a discussion on a Yahoo group that Reynolds linked to yesterday about prenatal-care provisions in health insurance, and why men and post-menopausal / sterile women should be forced to pay for it. The people who advocate that say that everyone has to "share the risk", to make it cheaper for the women who will need it.

Putting aside for the moment that the need for prenatal care is a predictable event and not probabilistic: outside of health insurance (where there usually isn't an option), nobody buys insurance for a risk that they don't expect to incur. "Sharing the risk", as the phrase was meant, simply does not occur and never has. it's like arguing that people who don't drive should be compelled to buy auto insurance anyway, so that it will be cheaper for people who do drive. No. Just no.
