Sarah Jones On The Horrors Of Western Society: The Dumbest Thing On Twitter This Week
Here you go! From @onesarahjones, Social media editor, @NewRepublic:
chris, it is supremely idiotic to believe the west is some shining beacon of free speech, women's rights, and religious tolerance
— Sarah Jones (@onesarahjones) June 7, 2017
Let's look seriously at her claim -- vis a vis, say, places she might choose to go live, such as Saudi Arabia:
Hmmm...she's free to drive, say whatever dumbass thing she wants (even criticize religion), go out of the house without a man's permission, leave the country without a man's permission, marry whomever she wants (even if it's a chick), and have gay sex, threesomes, and orgies -- even if she does so while loudly proclaiming to be an atheist.
Or...better yet, she is free to participate in a gay sex orgy while yelling, "Allah is a big girl's blouse!" (I love some of these Brit insults -- almost as much as I loved the guy running from the terrorist motherfuckers while taking care to not spill his pint.)
Yes, Sarah Jones can do all of these things -- things we call "individual rights" -- and nobody will stone her to death, throw acid on her, or throw her in jail. Nobody will actually do anything more to her than mock her on blogs and Twitter. (To borrow -- I think -- from one of those "Electric Company" kids' TV thingies of my youth: "Ow! That smarts!")
Sarah Jones is my new icon (for this week) of how publicly, unabashedly dumb po-mo thinking can make a person.

On the other hand, she wouldn't have to pay interest on her credit card in a Sharia compliant country. She could save money on pretty clothes and hairdressers too. Don't these advantages outweigh the problems of being a slave?

It comes across to me as just blind attention-seeking behavior (plus doing the secret tribal handshake). Yawn. I get a laugh out of the transgressive wannabees these days, who think they're doing something radical by continuing to roll over empty applecarts that were tipped half a century ago. Someone forgot to tell them: in the 21st century, shocking is trite. You wanna be transgressive? Invite Pamela Gellar to speak at your school.
Cousin Dave at June 8, 2017 6:47 AM
To paraphrase Churchill. Western society, with regards to free speech, women's rights, and religious tolerance, is very worst society except for all the other societies that have come before it and after it.

Although progressives seem to love China for some reason, one must be very careful about one's speech there, and in Russia prominent outspoken people have a way of dying. In China and Russia religion is closely monitored and restricted. How about the right of a woman to HAVE children in China for the past 30 yrs? They would force abortions if you already had a child.
Of course, progressives are always comparing to that perfect world in their imaginations. And of course, they are the very people trying to restrict free speech, religious tolerance (of Christians) etc.

These folks (leftists) are so desperate to be the heroic victims of oppression, to rise above that oppression like a Lifetime Movie heroine, that they'll make any behavior into oppression just to be able to tell the world how heroic they are.

I'm a very bad person. Because I love the following:
"You're a racist."
I spent two summers in Mississippi doing civil rights work in the Sixties while people like you were pissing themselves at the thought of going south of Cincinnati.
Even some reasonably "nice" people have said, "You?"
Anyway, I love it. People like the Jones person have no idea, no idea whatsoever, what they look like to those who have the tee shirt. No idea at all. They appeal to the small group of similarly inactive (in the real sense) mouthy idiots who want each other to know how heroic they are.
But they don't have the tee shirt and it shows.

Twitter - the invention that allows folks to share their every STUPID thought with everyone else.

As I often tell people who consider themselves so oppressed, "Where on this earth do you think you can go where you'll have it better?"
Could the U.S. do certain things better when it comes the rights of minorities? Maybe. But we still do it better than anyone else.
One of the things I noticed about the women who call themselves feminists, but aren't is that they clamor for more rights, but none of the responsibilities that men have.
Men can be legally compelled to die for their country. Women cannot.
So, is it fair that women should be allowed to run for public office, when they are put into a position to decide that men are going do this? Or even vote for representatives who can decide that men are going to do this?
Recently, there was a bit of a stink surrounding a movie theatre in Austin, Texas, which decided to show women's-only screenings of Wonder Woman.
Some people (contrary to what you read on articles surrounding this incident, it was not just men complaining about this) took issue with this instance of blatant discrimination.
While Texas is evidently one of three states that do not have public accommodation laws, the city of Austin does. And a lawyer decided to file a suit.
No idea how it will go. Technically, the movie theatre (known as The Alamo) did break the law. But on the Alamo's Facebook page, the men and women who complained about this were ridiculed (although their points were never countered) and insulted.
Evidently, what feminists want is what they already have. They want social sanction to foam, gnash and snarl over any perceived instance of sexism, real or imagined and regardless of how insignificant, but the same sanction to ridicule and deride any man who dares complain when he's on the receiving end of sexism. They don't want equality and never did. They want double-standards that favor them.

False dichotomy fallacy. Tsk, tsk.
Simply because there are other places considerably less free doesn't mean - well, doesn't mean that "the west is some shining beacon of free speech, women's rights, and religious tolerance." Saying that this place is better than Saudi Arabia doesn't mean that we don't have room for improvement or that we shouldn't try to improve. She may be an idiot, but she does have a point though it pains me to admit it.
Grey Ghost at June 9, 2017 5:55 AM
Her point wanst that there is room to improve, her point was we arent better than countries that beat women for being raped and throw gay men off buildings, cause that really is what multiculties think

Why would you vote for a law that FORCES you to die? That's not the same as social pressure to take responsibility - e.g., signing up.
Last I heard, feminists would be quite happy with the removal of the law that forces men to die for their country. If men don't like the current law re Selective Service, they're free to campaign to remove it, but it seems they're afraid of looking like cowards in the eyes of other men if they did.

The possibility of women being subject to the draft is what stopped the Equal Rights Amendment in the 1970s. And yes, a lot of women opposed it for that reason.
Cousin Dave at June 9, 2017 11:42 AM
Are you the same Richard Aubrey that used to comment at Volokh?
Jeff Guinn at June 9, 2017 12:58 PM
And yes, a lot of women opposed it for that reason.

Maybe, but how do we know that was the MAIN reason the ERA lost?
And again, nothing's stopping men from campaigning for what they want - IF they really want it.
lenona at June 12, 2017 6:26 PM
Having the Selective Service Act apply to women was brought up again last year, but dropped. No need to, you know, be that "equal".
Radwaste at June 16, 2017 4:59 PM
Sarah Jones can avoid being stoned in public in the USA -- UNLESS she is wearing a "MAGA" hat.
There's your "room for improvement".
