The Censoring Geniuses Of Facebook And Twitter
Do they have chimps operating big red "CENSOR!" buttons at Facebook and Twitter?
Morons. They censored Thomas Hegghammer, a respected researcher who studies Islam and jihadi groups. Here's a bit from a Stanford University page on him and his work:
Thomas Hegghammer is director of terrorism research at the Norwegian Defence Research Establishment in Oslo. He was the Zukerman fellow at CISAC in 2012-2013. He has previously held fellowships at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton and at Harvard, Princeton and New York Universities. Dr. Hegghammer studies militant Islamism with a particular focus on transnational jihadi groups. His book Jihad in Saudi Arabia (Cambridge 2010) won the silver medal of the Arthur Ross Book Award from the Council of Foreign Relations...
Oh, and this below -- his next book -- is published by Cambridge University Press, not ISIS. It'll be out in August. I hope this idiocy sells a few for him. It's Jihadi Culture: The Art and Social Practices of Militant Islamists.
So @facebook closes down page advertising my @CambridgeUP book on jihadi culture. Meanwhile, many real jihadi accounts stay up#facepalm pic.twitter.com/qLIxY0kX2G

Something similar has happened to Jerry Coyne on Twitter:
Twitter problems: my innocuous tweets flagged as "sensitive" https://t.co/7NT1wPrgwN pic.twitter.com/Yn77e8OWSB

Here's an especially moronic one. Poutine is weird food eaten by people who speak weird French (that is, Montreal-ers). Potatoes and cheese curd are involved.
.@Support One example of an innocuous "censored' vs. revealed tweet. It's about food! Can you fix? pic.twitter.com/IJvLFXIsgg

Yes, Twitter is censoring cheese fries -- in the name of decency!
It would be nice if these sites saw an ethical responsibility to take care with speech. I'm guessing a complaint or two is enough to shut down the speech of people who are not fomenting violence or doing anything other than putting out opinions others dislike.
Chimps operating a big red censor button would be an
improvement.

What? Social justice warriors on social media? Say it isn't so!
On the other hand, Facebook does include links to your representatives in government… Although "taking pictures of food" is far more popular, I bet. Responsibility and government are always for "other people"
