An Immigrant Who Didn't Cut The Line: 103-Year-Old Cambodian Woman Becomes A U.S. Citizen
Illegal immigration is a slap in the face to those who wait to come here legally -- who request citizenship and are chosen by us to be citizens instead of forcing themselves on us (and very often, our taxpayer-funded welfare system).
I'm for humanitarian immigration -- meaning, accepting people who are in danger in their native lands. But it needs to be our choice and not just fait accompli after somebody sneaks in and lives here for a bunch of years.
Saying that has nothing to do with "hating" Latinos or any other people, which is how it's often painted. Beyond our Constitution and checks and balances in government (the three-part system), I think we're a great country because we're a mix of immigrants.
It's like an immune system. Two romantic partners who have differing immune profiles make for the broadest system of defenses for any child they might have. Likewise, when you combine the innovations driven in part by the culture of each of the different peoples in this country, we're stronger and better off.
A 103-year-old Cambodian woman, Hong Inh, became a U.S. citizen on Tuesday, reports the AP in the LA Times:
Inh survived years of war and violence under the genocidal Khmer Rouge regime of the 1970s."During that time she was so suffering. They didn't have anything to eat," her granddaughter said.
She always wanted to come to America. It was "just a dream because she wished to live in a peaceful country," said grandson Kim Ngoun Taing, 36.
Relatives were able to bring her to the U.S. 5½ years ago. She had to be a legal permanent resident for at least five years to apply for citizenship.
"Our family is so proud and amazed. It's so unbelievable that my great-grandma achieved one of her dreams," Melissa Tea said.

Wow. That's quite a story. She survive Pol Pot's genocides and is still alive and kicking and now American at 103. Just wow.
