You're In This Country Illegally? Cool! Let's See What Gifts And Privileges We Can Give You!
Benjy Egel writes in the Sac Bee that the California Department of Motor Vehicles announced that more than 1 million "undocumented immigrants" have received driver's licenses:
Assembly Bill 60, authored by then-Assemblyman Luis Alejo in 2013, required California DMV offices to issue driver's licenses to undocumented immigrants as long as they can prove their identity and residence within the state. The law has led to 1,001,000 undocumented immigrants receiving licenses as of March 31 but doesn't give the licensees carte blanche to drive outside of California or fly across state or federal borders."Immigrants are getting tested, licensed and insured and this is making our roads safer for everyone," said Alejo, now a Monterey County supervisor, in a prepared statement. "Today, we see the law working the way it was intended to and has dramatically improved the lives of a million immigrants and their families."
What it does is reward people who are here illegally and make it easier and more attractive for them to remain here illegally.
In the WashEx, Paul Bedard writes that "illegal immigration costs taxpayers in all 50 states a total of $89 billion, and California ... pays the most at $23 billion..."
Bedard adds that the money pays for "expenditures for education, welfare, law enforcement, and medical care."
Who isn't getting the taxpayer-paid ride? Those who waited their turn and went by the book to get green cards and apply to become citizens.
On the other hand, if even illegal aliens who dont speak english can get government ID, I cant see how demorcats can keep up their racist assertion that black people are to incompetent to get ID for the voter ID debate

My husband had a client who was here illegally. She was 22 years old and had lived in the US since she was 2. Because she she was undocumented, she could get neither a license nor insurance. She had never had a ticket before she was in a car wreck.
It doesn’t seem right to me that she couldn’t just integrate into our society and start following the law. She didn’t even speak Spanish. The thought of her moving to Mexico on her 18th Birthday seems pretty ridiculous.

These people are not immigrants. Immigration is the legal entry into a country in accordance with its laws. Calling these criminals (yes they have broken the law and thus are criminals) undocumented immigrants is an attempt to obscure the fact that of what they are.
They are no more undocumented immigrants than a drug dealer is an undocumented pharmacist or a bank robber is simply making an undocumented withdrawal.

Let's ask someone who had to jump thru the hassles and expense of the green card process what they think of that...that's the thing, did she make inquiries as to how to go about becoming a legal resident alien?
So, a million licenses? and they're also registered to vote? serve on juries?
Another question: how did your client gain employment? one has to have either a social security number or taxpayer identification number. So...this person was either working under the table and avoiding employment taxes (fraud on the employer's part), or they were engaged in identity theft.

so all you denizens of mexifornia...how much more will you tolerate to live in a "nice" place...sewage on the streets, hepatitis, high taxes

You know, I'm all for simplifying our laws so that if there's a worker shortage any given year we can let in more people and close the doors after that. A mechanism for meeting our needs would not be a bad thing. "Look the other way and hire illegal immigrants" should not be that mechanism.
IRA... my husband lived in the US 15 years first as a student then as a worker, 3 of which were married to me, and never even got a greencard. He's one of the top guys in his STEM field. He did everything legally of course. It is a hassle. His employer covered the expense, though. In the end we left, for other reasons, and it ended up being a good thing because a greencard or US passport is a liability in these parts.
But I found it absurd. And yeah I get annoyed that line jumpers sometimes get away with it.
NicoleK at April 10, 2018 6:29 AM
Lujip, it's hard to get ID if you don't have a car, and don't live near an office that issues them, particularly if where you live has crappy transit.
I'd be for the law if every citizen got a free ID at their local post office.
NicoleK at April 10, 2018 6:30 AM
I am not saying that a 2 year old is a line jumper. At the same time, though, her parents did not do her a favor.

It isnt the US government’s job to rectify the mistakes of illegal alien parents, on the US taxpayer’s dime in order to pad the Democratic parties voter rolls.

He did everything legally of course. It is a hassle. His employer covered the expense, though.
And he had a taxpayer ID number (TIN), and filed income tax forms. All one needs is a visa that permits legal employment, of which there are a number.
The reason that some employers "look the other way" is because it is rather expensive to hire a legal employee. Unemployment, worker's comp, the employer's share of FICA, and Social Security all add up. In your husband's case, that was compounded with additional expenses.

At the heart of the illegal immigration debate, whether we're talking about adults or children, should be a discussion of a comprehensive, coordinated immigration policy and what the US hopes to achieve with it.
Instead, we're cobbling together a hodgepodge of immigration laws piecemeal, laws that have no overall aim but to appease widely divergent political bases and often contradict other laws.
Start with why we should allow immigration at all and work from there. Build a cohesive policy that guides all the immigration laws we pass from now on. And, no, "The New Colossus" is not a sound basis for an immigration policy.
What result do we expect of immigration? What do we expect of our new immigrants? What standards (skill sets, behavior, etc.) should we apply to new immigration applicants and why?
The US is a nation of immigrants, immigrants who built a distinct culture and a unique nation; we were the first self-declared nation in the world. New immigrants should be expected to assimilate and to make a contribution, both economically and culturally.

Are they really getting insurance, using their own information? I know more than one person (including my husband) who’s been hit by an uninsured illegal immigrant. As someone who lives in a border state, I just kind of accept that they’re here and they’re not going anywhere. It would be great if they actually had real liability insurance. I go to San Antonio a lot, and they really do have some of the worst drivers... I’ve always assumed it’s because there are a bunch of unlicensed drivers with no accountability who frankly just don’t give a shit. Want to know what happens to an unlicensed driver from Mexico when they side-swipe you? Nothing. At least not in the cities. So if this encourages them to be a little more legally responsible, that’s great. Especially if cops start actually arresting people for driving w/o a license. But, we know that won’t happen.

Jen at April 10, 2018 4:44 AM
No more ridiculous or more a hardship than any migrant of the millions of migrants who move to a new country. it happens all the time.
I would also question her not knowing any Spanish if parent(s) are from Mexico. She never spoke to her parent(s) in the past 20 years? or heard them speak in 20 yrs?
Joe J at April 10, 2018 11:51 AM
Unlike the Muslims in Europe; the Hispanic immigrants -legal and illegal alike- do want their children to integrate into the country.
These parents go as far as ban speaking Spanish entirely in their homes to ensure their kids won't end up speaking with a Chicano accent. So you have them speaking to their kids in what little broken English they know, and in a way, both learn the language together.
Sixclaws at April 10, 2018 7:35 PM
And then you have all the white parents who can afford it sending their kids to bilingual spanish school!
