The Little Strip Wasn't Pink
From FishbowlLA, an excerpt from a Vanity Fair interview with ex-superagent Sue Mengers, with whom I identify, at least in one department:
What do you consider your greatest accomplishment?
Not having children.
Well, maybe that's not my greatest accomplishment, but at least I've given what it means to have kids some thought -- from the part that's like passing a Ford Escort out a nostril, to the part where you have to put them through college, rehab, and rehab.

I thought the strip was blue for pregnant and pink for not???
Bobbi at May 11, 2005 8:48 AM
You forgot about the part where you have to put YOURSELF though rehab too.
Todd Fletcher at May 11, 2005 9:25 AM
So, Amy, what do you intend to do with all the money you die with?
Shivering Timbers at May 11, 2005 9:27 AM
Bobbi: Oops...shows you how careful I am about not getting preggers.
Todd, I'm into the boring addictions like personal responsibility...which is what (not AA) keeps you from becoming an anything-head.
Shivering: Since I refuse to write like Dear Abby and the other idiots in more papers than I am, at the moment, that's "all WHAT money"?

I had surgery several years ago to make sure I would *never* get pregnant. Even with protected sex, accidents happen, and I'm not about to have *that* kind of mistake. It was an outpatient procedure, didn't have any bad side effects, and it wasn't very painful. I highly recommend it to anyone who never wants children!
Goddyss at May 11, 2005 9:56 AM
Homosexuality is also a great way to prevent pregnancy.
Lena at May 11, 2005 11:28 AM
Agreed. However, bisexuality is *not*, so I'm kind of stuck between a muff and a hard place...
Goddyss at May 11, 2005 12:56 PM
I have two kids. I always wanted kids and I'm completely devoted to the amount of insane work it takes to mold them into adults.
People who know they prefer to avoid the insanity are people I admire very much! I have the utmost respect for the people who see that their life's course doesn't include offspring.
People who have kids out of a sense of "obligation" aren't doing anyone any favors.

"I'm kind of stuck between a muff and a hard place..."
Sounds pretty cozy to me!

Amy Alkon I adore you for this post. It's compelling and preciously rare evidence that women aren't just reproduction robots who have no choice but to respond to their 'natural feelings.'
Crid at May 11, 2005 8:14 PM
Thank you Amy! I still don't know if I want kids, but I hate when women act like I haven't accomplished anything in life until I do.
Lia at May 11, 2005 9:12 PM
Aww, even Crid has a soft spot for me!
(That actually means a lot!)
Thanks, Lia, too.

Parenthood should be a choice, and if you know in your heart that you aren't up to it, do yourself, and the next few generations a big favor, and don't have children.
Ira Pesserilo at May 12, 2005 7:01 AM
I dunno. I think Amy has more to pass along to future generations than Sue Mengers. My proudest accomplishment is that she didn't have kids. But you notice how you never see Nikki Finke and Sue together? Very curious, indeed.
KateCoe at May 12, 2005 8:06 PM
THAT is very funny!

Never give a child a hard time for asking an honest question.
