No, Everything Is Not A Conspiracy Against Christians And Jesus
It's the holiday version of seeing the Virgin Mary in your toast -- how, supposedly, Christians are deeming Starbucks cups an insult to Christmas and Christians because the seasonal cups are just red and green and lack snowflakes.
From HuffBlo news editor Hillary Hanson:
"This is a denial of historical reality and the great Christian heritage behind the American Dream that has so benefitted Starbucks," Andrea Williams of the U.K.-based organization Christian Concern told Breitbart. "This also denies the hope of Jesus Christ and His story so powerfully at this time of year."
Jesus played in the massive snowbanks of Nazareth? Okay, they have a few snowflakes there.
On a somewhat related note, for the record, I think it's dumb as fuck that stores instruct employees to say "Happy holidays."
It's Christmas -- a holiday that celebrates peace, joy, love, and clobbering the guy next to you to get the last Nintendo.
But Christians are the majority in this country.
They are not "persecuted" if, say, Macy's gives its employees the directive to go bland.
By the way, for anybody just dropping in here, I'm a post-Jewish atheist.
If you say "Merry Christmas" to me, I will say something back to you:
"Thank you! You, too!"
Not because I believe in Jesus. Because I try not to act like an asshole.
P.S. If your religion can't make it without the support of the graphic design at Starbucks, maybe you should consider switching.
P.P.S. I don't know any actual Christians who would make a hissy about something so dumb. Do you?

"I don't know any actual Christians who would make a hissy about something so dumb. Do you?"
Nope, and since I've seen a dozen facebook and other things complaining about this massive Christian protest, but have never heard of anyone actually protesting it or until you an actual link to someone, I had to wonder. So it's a British thing?
Joe j at November 10, 2015 10:49 PM
My Facebook friends run the entire Christian spectrum from Pentecostal to Mormons to Southern Baptists to Catholics and even the random Jesus Believing Unitarian. I've got conservatives who don't cut their hair, and I've got liberals who don't actually believe Jesus taught any commandments and everything inbetween. I know lots and lots and lots of Christians. Not one is upset about this.
I think this is designed by anti-Christians to make Christians look bad.
Although a couple of my Jewish friends posted photoshopped blue Starbucks cups with Menorahs on them. Ha! THat would be awesome.
Suzanne Lucas--Evil HR Lady at November 11, 2015 12:32 AM
I haven't heard anyone complain about the cups.
The only things I can remember Christians getting much upset about was some store (followed by others) disallowed its employees to say "merry christmas" but instead had to say "Seasons Greetings" or something generic like "have a good day." Then there was something about nativity scene no longer being allowed that got some people in a tizzy, more recently some H.S. choirs were dis-allowed from participating in a seasonal concert because it was held in a building that is owned by a church or something like that.
I can't think of anyone I know in the US that does not do something for Christmas...Oh wait, I knew some Jehovah witnesses that didn't...an Asian family I knew had get together more like Thanksgiving, a Jewish family had a tradition of going to this one restaurant for the Christmas special with turkey(?) instead of Ham.
The Former Banker at November 11, 2015 12:46 AM
The choir hissy fit happened near me. The concert is held on property owned by the Catholic Church and they charge an admission fee. Therefore, someone decided that it was supporting the church and it must be stopped so no more concert. Something like that.
I am a Christian and I am not the slightest bit offended over the Starbucks cups. In fact, I think the whole controversy is making Christians look petty and ridiculous over something so stupid and insignificant. Besides, if Starbucks was so "War on Christmas" they wouldn't be selling Christmas Blend coffee or advent calendars. Be glad they even opted to go festive with their cups at all instead of having their standard white cups.
BunnyGirl at November 11, 2015 1:07 AM
Nothing seen here in West Central Texas or on my FB pages (U.S.A. and some elsewhere).
MSM reporting in lock-step about something only a few (any?) do. Shocking! Are they a hive or do they have a meeting or something?
It's almost as if they are brain-washed/trained to think alike. Self-selected worker bees?
Bob in Texas at November 11, 2015 4:01 AM
Personally, I think Christians should be offended by the whole nonsense surrounding Christmas. If you want to be celebrate a holiday marked by decorated trees in your living room, giving out toys and filling stockings, fine. More power to you. But don't pretend you're celebrating Jesus's birthday. Absolutely none of this stuff has anything to do with Jesus, who was not born in December anyway.
But the supposed war on Christmas rages on, supposedly because a liberal hatred of Jesus...who has nothing to do with Christmas.
Patrick at November 11, 2015 4:08 AM
Haven't heard any raving about it over here, either. This might be one of those things that people hear about, but few, if any, have actually seen themselves.
Old RPM Daddy (OldRPMDaddy at GMail dot com) at November 11, 2015 5:48 AM
I am a Christian, and only a few of my more rabid relatives have jumped on the Starbucks cup bandwagon. I'm offended that a few people have (once again) managed to make me look bad.
Patrick- I despise Christmas as it is done.. I hate the waste of money. I can't stand Santa. I don't mind a few gifts, but the worshipping of stuff is annoying. I'd much rather a few small gifts be exchanged and the rest of the day was spent just enjoying life..
Sharon at November 11, 2015 6:06 AM
My family and I are fairly churchy joes but we rarely celebrate Christmas on Christmas. Because we are also cheap bastards. It is just so much cheaper and easier to travel off peak holidays. I think we are doing Thanksgiving the week of Dec 6th.
As Patrick points out, Jesus was born around July not December. The Romans weren't stupid. You call a census like that in the summer when the crops need minimal attention and travel is easiest.
So no. The Starbucks 'War on Christmas' doesn't involve us. Though I had heard about some pastor somewhere being so proud about 'tricking' the barista into writing Merry Christmas on his cup. What can I say. Some people have weird hobbies.
Ben at November 11, 2015 7:23 AM
I haven't seen anyone on FB upset by the cups. Have seen a lot of people post about how to REALLY be a Christian, though, qand it doesn't involve cups. I don't ever buy at Starbucks, I have a lot of issues with their company, so it doesn't affect me. But this would not be an issue for me, if I did buy there.
momof4 at November 11, 2015 7:27 AM
The "controversy" is 100% manufactured. Here's what happened:
-Some dumb blogger for Breitbart wrote some drivel about how this year's Starbucks cups weren't special or Xmassy enough.
-A second-rate "Christian" radio show host started Tweeting about it, thinking he'd ride the wave of "controversy" to more listeners.
-A handful of Twitter accounts (a few of which are troll/parody accounts, and the rest of which are fringe weirdos who listen to the above mentioned Xtian radio host) tweeted about it.
-Buzzfeed was like "OMFG CONTROVERSY!!!" and publicized the heck out of the, like, five Twitter accounts Tweeting about this.
-Everyone on Facebook was like, "Sweet, another reason to call Christians dumb! I'm gonna share and share and share and share because I'm so progressive. And I'm gonna criticize Christians for not caring about real issues like POVERTY, even though I'm not doing anything about it myself except for sharing dumb Buzzfeed articles and hating on religious people."
At the end of the day, it's all free advertising for Starbucks...
sofar at November 11, 2015 7:42 AM
The fact that they have red cups is nice. I have no idea why anyone would complain about that. Of course, my former in-laws managed to say something about evil Starbucks to my visiting kid last night. But I expect nothing less from them. They don't much go to church, either.
gooseegg at November 11, 2015 8:08 AM
The only person I know that mentioned anything about it (on Facebook) is a blowhard asshole. Nobody else I know cares at all.
I found the whole "race together" initiative a few months ago to be stupid, misguided, and presumptuous, but I really don't give two toots about the color of the coffee cups, no matter the season.
ahw at November 11, 2015 9:05 AM
@Patrick
We mostly celebrate Christmas like Thanksgiving, except we go to several more church services. No trees, no lights, no gift wrap - it's just so garish and ill-befits the commemoration of the birthday of the King of Kings when he condescended to become a poor Jewish boy, as we all know that Joseph the Workman would not have been rolling in the dough.
I have only seen this red cup thing from professional rabble rousers who really enjoy sticking it in the eyes of the "sky-daddy-believing jesus freaks". It's not like Starbucks is the In-N-Out or Chic-fil-a or Hobby Lobby; why would anyone really want somebody who doesn't believe what you believe pretending to do so?
El Verde Loco at November 11, 2015 9:49 AM
"I think this is designed by anti-Christians to make Christians look bad. "
And yet, you have no proof.
Odd.
Gog_Magog_Carpet_Reclaimers at November 11, 2015 10:08 AM
The controversy is being driven by the perception that Starbucks caved in to SJWs. When one person or entity gives in to a bully, it makes it that much tougher for everyone else.
Cousin Dave at November 11, 2015 11:38 AM
Starbucks is evil because their matcha is pre sweetened, and they often run out of soy milk,
Their cups are obviously red because they are a bunch of commie socialists....nothing to do with Christmas. :-)
Isn't that enough?
Seriously though, their baristas, and counter workers are some of the friendliest, and most efficient.
On the rare occasions that I stop, it is usually because I am tired thirsty, and need a quick pick me up for the road.
Less and less these days, because of the pre sweetened matcha issue.
Isab at November 11, 2015 1:56 PM
Pretty much have to agree with sofar. manufactured.
Joe J at November 11, 2015 2:38 PM
I'm kinda disappointed. No christians I know are upset at this.
Ofcourse most of my christians friends, who are still my friends, have had the war on christmas outrage beaten out of them by me*.
When ever they'd proclaim outrage, I'd quote them the bible passage forbidding christmas trees, and point out Roman tax season was in the spring and the catholic church appropriated Yule in attempts to convert the people they hadnt slaughtered for heresy.
And that buy protesting on behalf of christmas they are endorsing the slaughter or enslavement of innocent children and if that doesnt bother them, dirctly violating gods laws
*but only when they are being assholes

Christian business owners are being legally persecuted by homosexuals for not baking cakes; Christian organizations are being forced by 0bamacare to insure abortifacient birth control; and Christian county clerks are being forced by an asinine Supreme Court ruling to issue gay marriage licenses.
Amid all of this, these people are worried about PLAIN RED CUPS???
Choose your freakin' battles carefully, people!
mpetrie98 at November 11, 2015 6:43 PM
None of my Facebook friends, who are almost all Christians, seem to care the least bit about the design on Starbucks cups. So far the only thing I've heard about this was on Facebook in a couple of those posts that shows up even though it has nothing to do with anyone I'm friends with. Both seemed to be ridiculing Christians for making an issue out of it.
I'm a Christian and I like Starbucks. Their coffee is high-priced and mediocre, but the people who work there are always so nice to me. I couldn't care less what color their cups are. It's one of the few places where a physically ugly, socially inept, old guy like me can have someone pretty make eye contact and smile while she takes my order, and make an effort to make sure I like what I get, without giving me the feeling that my existence annoys her. And I can get in and out in less than five minutes.
Ken R at November 11, 2015 8:46 PM
"...and Christian county clerks are being forced by an asinine Supreme Court ruling to issue gay marriage licenses."
Just curious: what other personal opinions held by a public official do you think are grounds for not doing their job?
Radwaste at November 12, 2015 12:04 AM
Now, Rad, don't go getting all rational and stuff.
Next thing you know they'll be complaining that the requirement for churches to stay out of politics to qualify for tax-free status is nothing but anti-Christian hatred!

Gog_Magog_Carpet_Reclaimers at November 12, 2015 12:20 PM
Radwaste. You might want to prepare to ask that question of a Muslim. The Hamtramck city council is majority Muslim.
I continue to be perplexed at the bad luck of gay couples who, having been oppressed, suppressed, repressed, and depressed their whole lives by evil Christian fundies seem to find evil Christian fundies to do their wedding.
What, the gay businesses don't the the business?
And none of these unfortunate and completely random encounters encounter a Muslim shop.
Note to self: Find your old statistics text.

Suzanne Lucas says, "I think this is designed by anti-Christians to make Christians look bad."
I read an editorial yesterday, and of course now I can't recall where it was and I can't seem to locate it, positing that the whole hoopla might have been manufactured by Starbucks as a viral ad campaign. The fact that no major mainstream Christian church, group, or outlet seems to have expressed any outrage, but that it all seems to have originated from obscurity, is an interesting point. I wonder if we'll find out at some point (after we've sucked down gallons more Starbucks coffee) that wingnut publicity-hound Joshua Feuerstein got a few bucks from the 'Buck to make this an issue.
Grey Ghost at November 13, 2015 6:38 AM
"... Joshua Feuerstein got a few bucks from the 'Buck to make this an issue."
So it is a conspiracy? What if it's a conspiracy twisted with an enigma, wrapped in a riddle, and smothered in secret sauce? Yum!
Ben at November 13, 2015 9:15 AM
I am a Christian and could care less what color Starbucks' cups are. Christmas is a pagan holiday brought into the church by Roman Catholicism. December 25 is not Jesus' birthday and we are under no obligation to celebrate it.
