Big Lefty Government Is Anti-Freedom, Anti-Individual, And Makes Things Worse
Disgusting story out of the U.K. (Details on "Private Schools" vs. "Public Schools" there, as it's a little confusing.)
Benjamin Kentish writes for the Independent that the Labour Party has voted to abolish private schools if it wins the next election.
In a major policy shift, a motion approved by delegates at the gathering in Brighton said a government led by Jeremy Corbyn would "challenge the elite privilege of private schools" and claimed that "the ongoing existence of private schools is incompatible with Labour's pledge to promote social justice".It said the party would include in its next manifesto "a commitment to integrate all private schools into the state sector."
...Controversially, the party will also force universities to ensure that only 7 per cent of students they admit went to private schools - the same proportion as in the general population.
Some people are prettier or come from wealthier families.
Why should they have their advantages yanked from them?
It's Harrison Bergeronism -- for the story by Vonnegut, where beautiful and smart people were handicapped to remove their advantages. (Beautiful people were made to wear masks to look ugly and smart people made to wear radio receivers that would blast sound periodically to interrupt their thoughts.)
The Party's intentions are redolent of Communist nationalization of businesses and private property. (P.S. That didn't end well.)
And private schools' property, land and other assets will be seized and "redistributed democratically and fairly across the country's educational institutions".However, the move is likely to force Labour to raise funds elsewhere to cover the costs of the influx of private school pupils into the state sector.
Oh, and let's consider the good of England as a whole. Making people get worse education when they can afford better -- well, that sounds like a fantastic idea in the long run.
Of course, wildly rich people will just send their kids off to boarding school in Switzerland. This will hurt not only the kids of the wealthy but those of families who aren't so wealthy, but scrape money together so their kids might do better than their parents, or at least do okay.

I thought Eton et al were public schools?

They are by the British definition. However in essence a Public school in Britain is what is called a private school in the US as I have always understood it. Eton is not a “government run” school.

"Of course, wildly rich people will just send their kids off to boarding school in Switzerland."
Or they will leave. You have the same problem with crazy taxes. Raise them too high and whatever you are taxing vanishes.

Right. Let us not forget how many wealthy left-wing entertainers in Great Britain have their legal residence in tax-haven Monaco.
Not all private schools in Great Britain ore Etons or Charterhouses. As I understand it, they have something akin to charter schools in the U.S. Presumably those would be banned too. Is home schooling legal there? (I suspect not.)

I suspect that is who this is really aimed at Cousin Dave. I am guessing that there is some legal carve out for the very wealthy that will let them keep sending their kids to some private school and all the middle class people will be forced into lower quality government run schools.

They'll just make it illegal to send your children abroad for school, as they did under the List Acts.
jdgalt at October 2, 2019 8:39 AM
Why should we use anything overseas as example?
The Bureau of Land Management apparently put a guy in jail for five years and fined him $400,000 for ~$400 worth of fire "damage" when a controlled burn escaped his property. You know, if you force him to sell, the government gets first bid?
The Ventura, CA county sheriff's office raided a house and shot a man dead because they wanted his property, abutting a state park.
Sniper Lon Horiuchi killed Randy Weaver's wife for the crime of holding her baby, resulting in a $9mil judgment for Weaver.
The BATF (now BATFE) killed a few dozen children demonstrating how tough they were, rather than simply arresting David Koresh (Vernon Howell) a few days before when agents went shooting with him.
There are all sorts of governmental abuses going on in the USA. Step onto an airplane to find another way.

The British state run education system is a failing system. Its inner city schools have already collapsed under the burden of warehousing the influx of violent Muslim spawn, whose parents do not want them to have a Western education and encourage them to be as disruptive as possible, the systems inability to attract an retain quality teachers, and the absurd curriculum created by the neoMarxist overlyPC, often Muslim dominated school councils.
In other words, the only children in the UK who are currently getting a decent education are those enrolled in Public Schools (translation, Public School is English for private school).
Some public schools have pretty sever hazing, but being hazed is infinitely better than being stabbed, robbed, or beaten half to death which is par for the course in a UK urban council school.
The Labour Party wants to speed the slide of the UK into the shite hole.

You'd think instead of making the good schools worse they'd go for making the bad ones better.
NicoleK at October 2, 2019 10:03 AM
That takes more effort NicoleK. It also tends to piss of the incompetents who are why that school was so bad.
Ben at October 2, 2019 10:25 AM
In the UK there are Independent Schools, Public Schools and State Schools. I wonder which schools William's and Harry's kids will go to; and Jeremy Corbyn's grandchildren.
Leftists worry so much about "elite privilege" and pay lip service to "social justice". Somehow their idea of social justice is always the opposite of freedom. It takes a lot of force, violence and oppression to impose "social justice".
Ken R at October 2, 2019 11:06 AM
The force of government should be exercised solely to protect the rights of the individual, not enforce arbitrary control by the state. Of such is tyranny made.
Inside every Social Justice Warrior is a tyrant screaming to get out. And he imagines that, come the Revolution, he'll be safely doling out punishment to others due to his "correct" associations. Just ask Trotsky or Robespierre how that worked out for them. The Revolution always eats its own.

I think perhaps envy is the deadliest sin, because it allows you to justify all sorts of evil actions: taking people's wealth, killing, burning buildings, getting rid of the kulaks.

Of course, you are free to look up the action report, the lawsuit, etc., just as you are free to defend law enforcement officials from the consequences of their actions.
They're better than us. Why protest at all, since we have it coming?
Radwaste at October 4, 2019 4:25 AM
You do have a newsletter Rad. You should offer Gog a link. I'm afraid I can't recall it right now.
