The Crazy Hits Spy-Land
Darragh Roche writes at Newsweek:
A new recruitment video from the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) has been widely panned on social media for its use of terms that critics have described as "woke."The CIA shared the video on its Twitter account on April 28 but reaction to the ad has grown over the past few days. Many critics weighed in on the matter on Sunday. The video features a CIA officer, Mija, describing her own experience.
"I am unapologetically me. I want you to be unapologetically you, whoever you are. Whether you work at #CIA, or anywhere else in the world," the tweet read. "Command your space. Mija, you are worth it."
Um, there are places to let your freak flag fly, and the CIA had better not become one of them. Or...should we just be all, "Yoohoo, Mr. Putin and China, we'll leave the keys under the mat"?
Oh, and I say this ("freak flag") as a lifelong weirdo. Note, however, that I am not employed by a government spying agency.
There was also this:
Mija says she suffered from "imposter syndrome" but she refuses to "internalize misguided patriarchal ideas of what a woman can or should be."
Yawn. Are we "unapologetic!!!" or are we suffering "from 'imposter syndrome'"? I'm a little unclear.
Aisha Ahmad, a PhD candidate tweeted:
"Actual quotes from this new CIA recruitment ad:
'I am a woman of color'
'I am a cisgender millennial'
'I have been diagnosed with generalized anxiety disorder'
'I am intersectional'"
Omitted: "I work for a spy agency and I can't shut up."
This is so perfect:
"Looking forward to @cia's next video, which will explain how 'enhanced interrogation' is actually super woke," wrote Asheesh Kapur Siddique, assistant professor of history at the University of Massachusetts Amherst.

Woke is rather pervasive in all DC organizations. The DC area is 90% liberal and looking for any excuse to get rid of the other 10%. I just put it down as to why Hunter Biden's laptop has been in limbo for years, and Guliani gets raided.

Is it working? Did they recruit a bunch of young people?
NicoleK at May 6, 2021 1:40 AM
I’m sure it will benefit the CIA to recruit a cadre of younger millennials who can endlessly engage in the woke internal discussions of the sort that are currently tearing Basecamp apart.

Didn't the Dept of Justice advertise that their jobs would not be subject to testing for mental acuity?
I'm tellin' ya: Reasoning Deficit Disorder is real.
As real as ADHD, Asperger's, autism, etc.
You saw it here first.

The CIA is a group that lies professionally. Hiring the woke makes some sense in that context. They want to hire experienced liars and see if they can add the professional stuff later instead of starting with professionals and teaching them to lie.

That's frightening. Think about it: 10 hour struggle sessions until you talk. Do not be surprised if we hear from those subjected to them to say I'd rather been water boarded.

Oh, wait.

great - and how long will it be before one of these woke spooks decides to leak personal information about everyone voted for someone they don't like, or belongs to the wrong organization, or has simply spoken to the wrong person?
these people are very dangerous, people have to get past the idea that they're just misguided but 'well intentioned'. Most of them are actually self absorbed bigots.

"great - and how long will it be before one of these woke spooks decides to leak personal information..."
Considering that's their mission, about 3 seconds.

I know from person contacts, most of the people working for the CIA are office drones. Low level paper pushers.
You get access to classified data on a need to know basis.
OTOH, when everyone coming out of college with a liberal arts degree has been politicized, into socialist workness, I am sure that actual spy recruitment pool is about an inch deep and draining fast.

Because that's what you want in a spy, an over-arching sense of anxiety and worry. Actually.... No. Maybe. Well....
Still, this doesn't seem like a good mental condition for a spy or spymaster or even an analyst to have.

Did no one think to cast Woody Allen as a James Bond knockoff?

Who would have known these kids would end up working for the CIA?

The Firm was Brimley's best role, and completely unexpected. We coulda used two fewer scenes of Hackman and two more of Wilfred.
(Well, actually that was a good movie that had a LOT of scenes, very long, that film. Runaway Jury the same way a few years later. Handsome picture, but a commitment to rewatch.)Crid at May 6, 2021 8:14 PM
That moment when you realize you can't remember a single other Brimley movie besides Cocoon, which was also the last time anyone ever heard from the Welch girl.

Thank you for preventing a profound generational humiliation.
(There was something Beatle-ish about that tune.)
Also, I was in an 11-story building, 200+ units, from 8 to 14… And it was international, like the United Nations. The one thing we had was community, especially that one summer when the A/C broke and it took six weeks to get parts from Georgia, and we kept all the doors open.
