Kiss Me, I'm Danish
Not really, but I'm Danish in spirit, as not one, but three of Denmark's newspapers plan to reprint a cartoon Thursday that depicts the barbarian Mohammed wearing, of course, a bomb-shaped turban. Via the AP in Editor & Publisher:
The announcement follows the arrests of three people suspected of plotting to kill Kurt Westergaard, who drew one of 12 Muhammad caricatures.Publication of the drawings in 2005 and then again in 2006 led to protests in Muslim countries.
The papers say they are taking the action to show they will not be intimidated by fanatics.
Islamic law generally opposes any depiction of the prophet.
I hold certain things to be important or good -- rational thought, dressing in something other than sweatpants, reading, and fine food...just to name a few (I'm at the airport leaving for Paris, so excuse me for dashing off a rather cursory list). If you don't take to these things, I promise not to shoot you, stab you, slash your throat, or burn your embassy down.
Likewise, if you think I'm going to come to some horrible end (entirely without evidence), and I think you're ridiculous for believing, without evidence, in god and all the rest -- can't we just peacefully agree to disagree?
And if western freedoms of speech and all the rest don't work for the backward sheepherder mentality held by even those holding cell phones as they set bombs in London, well, fuck off and go back to the tent in the desert.
thanks, Crid

Cudos to the papers reprinting it. Time somebody said (more politely than I would) up yours to these assholes.

It's long past time, Donna, and I say good for them! I wouldn't worry about being polite or not, either. Fuck 'em. o_O

All bravado aside, the Danes have done the right thing; may they bear well the nonsensical violence they will surely see.
Muhamed was a man. If some believe he was God's prophet, fair enough. Other religions have prophets too and people are allowed to think about them from time to time without washing their crotches first.
To walk away from this fight is to sentence civilization to a thousand years of misery. Anybody know where I can buy a Danish flag? Today, I am Danish (raspberry, extra icing.)

I think the saddest part of this is that most western papers refused to print the cartoons. Kudos to that paper for reprinting it.

I read that Winston. How do you take someone seriously that still acts as if they believe in witches? Maybe we should start threatening them with our "super sorcerer powers" and the friggin tooth fairy.
martin - add a little cream cheese and you'll be perfect.

Someone should make up a bazillion of them and drop them out of an airplane all over the Middle East. If I had the money I'd do it. o_O

What ever happened to the guy in Candada who was being tried for allowing similar (the same?) cartoons to be published in a paper (I think he was the editor or something)???
We all watched his "trial" via You Tube...I didn't bookmark his blog and I want an update!!

A white cross on a field of red, it takes a swingin' bunch of cats to pull off that look. Their orneriest days are surely behind them but the blood of the Vikings pulses yet in the veins of their newspapermen.
I've been riding the Danes a bit lately because of the 20/20 piece about their cradle-to-grave social entitlements programs. They have an expression: "tryghed" -- the Danish word for "tucked in" -- like a snug child. To each their own and all that good stuff but when Nancy Pelosi comes to tuck me in there will be trouble.
Socialists they might be but it's good to see they are able to put away their jammies when they need to. It would be cool if they'd start wearing those horned helmets again.

While you're on your tirade overseas, I don't want you to miss the opportunity to share your thoughts and perspectives on this US news:
"The Kansas State High School Activities Association said referees reported that Michelle Campbell was preparing to officiate at St. Mary's Academy near Topeka on Feb. 2 when a school official insisted that Campbell could not call the game.
The reason given, according to the referees: Campbell, as a woman, could not be put in a position of authority over boys because of the academy's beliefs."
Go get um tiger!

Hi Amy,
A little off topic here, but I just checked, and the spoof site feministing.org is back up:
http://www.feministing.org/
The host, Amynda, has a rather interesting poem for V-day titled "I have a mighty vagina"

I wish Norway would get a backbone when it comes to these guys who come here, milk off the system, and cause general problems. There's a man here named Kekar who used to run a northern Iraqi terrorist organization and has been a refuge living off social assistance since coming here a long time ago. He makes threats while in Norway and they've only decided now that he can finally be deported... but only if they know for sure he won't be killed when sent back to Iraq. The man has been back to Iraq to 'visit' so many times and hasn't ended up dead so why the authorities wait, I don't know.
