I'm amused by this headline in the Monday MYT: Mormons Tipped Scale in Ban on Gay Marriage

There used to be a joke that PETA types would rather throw red dyes onto the furs of women in Beverly Hills than onto the leather jackets of the manly bikers from the Hell's Angels. Similarly, No-on-8 people would rather rail at Mormons than the voters from their local First AME sanctuary.

Just sayin'.

As for dresses, Deborah Harry wore two brown garbage bags onstage for at least one performance, possibly SNL, with no complaints whatsoever.

Raddy, gargage bags are totally acceptable, I used to wear them as raingear when riding on the back of a motorcycle. Katy Perry's outfits are just too over the top to be taken seriously! o.O

I think the carousel dress is kind of cool, but I guess that's just me. (No, I wouldn't wear it.) This girl's whole schtick is to shock, anyway. I'd say, even with the eyes on her boobs, she's probably dressed better than Mariah Carey.

Beyond the clothing, Mariah Carey always looks odd to me because of what she does to her eyebrows. Overplucked yet they go on and on like the Coney Island rollercoaster.

I disagree. This is the type of stuff I'd expect a fun entertainer to do. I think it totally fits her personality and her music. If she were to wear some high-end fashion clothing, I think it would be pretty obvious that she isn't being true to her music. And from a marketing perspective, she's being different, which is a 'great' thing in the industry where everyone is beginning to sound the same (and dress the same).

The author is spot on with the Grace Jones comparison, but I think the author pre-supposes that Katy Perry isn't of the same mold. Everything I've seen so far makes me believe she's being consistent.

I abhor pop music, but I'll defend an artist that I think has merits for a defense.

Bjork and the swan suit worked as fun fashion. This crosses the line. But I do appreciate a woman willing to experiment -- if this was an experiment and not just an accident.
